Classy and refined
I must confess it: I never tested before this scent. When I was a little girl, I remember the advertising with the slogan "La femme est une ile" (The woman is an Island) reminding me to an exotic fragrance, maybe made of vanilla, spices or coconut. Well, I sprayed this morning this iconic fragrance from the precious tester I've senn on the drugstore shelf and...what a surprise! I discovered a very classy and refined four-seasons fragrance, as elegant as a string of black pearls : immediately I smelled the galbanum note, made fresher and gentler by the flowery-citrusy acchord ; at the heart, the Jasmine, the carnation and the ylang are well balanced and not too vibrant or heavy, but well harmonized with the notes at the base: moss, amber (neither heavy nor medicinal ) and tree moss.
On my skin it's a symphony of aromatics notes with deep accents balanced by the solos of the top notes.
A sophisticated scent a little bitter to wear as a silk shirt. The sillage is quite good, the bottle simple but elegant and the price medium to high, but right in comparison to the very good quality and the longevity of of this iconic perfume.
So, the woman is an Island to discover....

Perfect for those who are ambivalent towards chypres
If, like me, you can appreciate good chypres, but sometimes find those too bitter/earthy in their drydown, this may be a very good choice!
Fidji is green, crisp and versatile like a chypre, but does not dry down that 'dark'.
I love Fidji. I have both the EDP and the EDT and I prefer the latter because the EDP is more 'warm' and has a bit more of that darkness in it. The EDT is brighter and radiates more than the EDP.
I love how I get whifs of it when moving around or when biking, catching a summer's breeze, a bit like happens with L'Air du Temps Eau de Parfum ; some compare it to that, but Fidji is more timeless and less vintage smelling in my opinion, also the lack of carnation makes it a different scent. But Fidji is also much more 'chypre' than L'Air du Temps.
But I love both in their own seperate ways.
It can be bought online for a song, but is does not smell cheap in any way, it smells sophisticated (but not pretentious or bossy).
I don't find this scent really 'tropical' as the name may suggest, but there is a slight feel to it of being in an expensive sunny resort.
Also perfect for office-wear. Sillage and longlivity are average, but good enough to leave a beautyful trail behind you. I always can smell it in the room where I sprayed it, hours after spraying.

An island lost in the ocean
A very beautiful perfume at a low price.

Fidji is a vintage aldehyde perfume but even for me who doesn't like aldehydes, it remains very pretty thanks to its very pronounced floral side. Furthermore, the aldehydes are here very mild (no smell of "cat pee", we are more in a L'Air du Temps Eau de Parfum style as already mentioned below). It's fresh and green.

Usually, I don't really like chypres but this one is just timeless, not too earthy, not too "patchoulized". Really lovely.

A perfume to try without preconceptions!

We Two
You and I, it used to be like fire and water. There were more than a few explosions. Why, we probably didn’t really understand back then. Maybe we were just young and foolish. Both of us. Today, with a bit more maturity, we found each other. We learned to love one another and are happy to have each other. That we are a family.

If we had known back then that we share a very similar taste in fragrances, perhaps we could have spared ourselves some rather painful experiences? Just recently, I had the chance to sniff one of your favorite scents and recognized similarities to one of my all-time fragrance loves. And now I hold this little vial of Fidji from the lovely Marieposa in my hands and once again realize, yes, it simply smells enchanting. My favorite flowers may be a bit more ambered and a bit more musky, but I immediately recognize the kinship.

In the 1966 version, Fidji had been your favorite scent. This here is the current version from 2003, which simply smells beautiful to me. Although I have never been an outright lover of tuberoses. Jasmine, iris, and ylang-ylang are more among my favorite blooms. And musk, balsam, amber, and sandalwood, as long as they are not synthetic, are also notes that I enjoy. Rose and galbanum only appeal to me occasionally. But Fidji is simply a delightful overall composition. Soft, floral, pure. As if I were floating over a flower meadow in spring. So weightless, so airy, and yet it also has a certain presence that never feels overwhelming. Light-footed. This attribute fits wonderfully for me. And with all its softness, galbanum brings the edge that a truly beautiful fragrance needs. Because too smooth is also boring.

My favorite person revealed to me 20 years ago that we are simply too much alike. Perhaps that’s why our taste in fragrances is quite similar. And unfortunately, also why there were so many frictions in the past. Today we’ve understood that. And that is so beautiful. This review is for you, my dear M.

And I thank the wonderful Marieposa for the opportunity to test this.

The Woman is an Island, "Fidji" is Her Perfume
Through this advertising slogan, "Fidji" became a success in the fragrance world in 1966 and has remained so to this day.
The couturier Guy Laroche already knew at that time how important it is to find the right name for a creation.
With Fidji, this island nation in Oceania, he managed to capture the spirit of the times and awaken the longing for the exotic and the unknown.
He relied on imagination: the untouched beauty of the Pacific islands, the tropical climate, the splendor of the exotic, fragrant plant world - all of this is still "Fidji" today!

In 1966, I was already a teenager, so it is no surprise that I still remember this fragrance with the seductive name so well.
Whether I encountered it back then, I do not know: my surroundings were actually too conventional to allow such longings in the form of fragrance.
Later, I forgot about it, and since I have been in this community, I have not been able to obtain a sample of the perfume or Eau de Toilette.
Until recently, when I had the chance to browse through Marieposa's collection and she sent me a sample of the 2003 Eau de Toilette (along with other beautifully dreamy fragrances).

Even before the first spray, it was exciting: Would this composition match my expectations of the last 55 years?
This floral-fresh fragrance entity, which does not disappoint even in this lighter concentration, embodies the exoticism of the island world it is named after!
It invites you to dream and allows for the most beautiful escape from everyday life day after day.

Just the opening is a true fragrance journey: flowers upon flowers and a hint of resin open the view into a fragrance world that seduces and simultaneously delights.
The flowers listed in the fragrance pyramid and a hint of lemon and bergamot, along with galbanum, lead the way to the heart of this fragrance island, which beats so powerfully, spicily, and radiantly.
Clove, possibly some pepper, and a pinch of cinnamon play a significant role alongside bright aldehydes.
The classic base of spicy and simultaneously balsamic fragrance notes concludes with a sparkling amber fireworks.

Green and fresh, floral and woody, earthy and of exotic sensuality, "Fidji" unfolds as an Eau de Toilette on my skin, spreading the magic of the South Seas and allowing me to enjoy this break for several hours.

"Fidji" was already described back then as "a glowing, delicate, and vibrant perfume" and is promoted as a concept "of escape, refined exoticism, sensuality, and seduction."
I cannot describe the current Eau de Toilette any better.
Therefore, Guy Laroche should also have the last word here.
