Today, a long-forgotten fragrance came rolling into my hands, namely "Gelsomini di Capri". It's snowing outside and it's cold, so I wanted to treat myself to a bit of summer feeling.
The scent definitely spreads summer vibes, albeit a rather one-dimensional one. In the first few minutes, you can still sense citrus fruits, but they quickly dissipate, leaving only jasmine. Now, one could point out that this is only logical since jasmine is already in the name. Interestingly, gelsomini means both jasmine and fragrance. So, I’m not sure what exactly is meant by the title. Perhaps Capri simply smells of jasmine.
A look at the fragrance pyramid reveals that there should actually be a few other notes present, which I unfortunately cannot detect.
I do not notice the pepper or the ginger, nor the rose or other components of the heart note. They are all overshadowed by the jasmine.
I really don’t want to say that "Gelsomini di Capri" is a bad fragrance, not at all! The jasmine is very authentic and, contrary to expectations, just stays below the threshold of sticky, kitschy sweetness. I wrote that in my statement two months ago as well. For lovers of jasmine scents, it should be perfect.
What I find disappointing, however, is the drydown. A rather dusty, sour note slithers over the skin. Until then, the scent remains very pleasantly stable.
Personally, I miss a counterpoint to the lovely floral notes. Something fresh, something spicy, anything other than jasmine. But for anyone looking for vacation vibes to spray on, "Gelsomini di Capri" comes highly recommended.
I like it precisely because there's something medicinal in the dry down. It sets the scent apart from others of the same kind. That must be the sour note you’re describing.
