One of my favorite memories.
The winter holidays are just around the corner and it's freezing cold outside. So when my mother asks me if I would like to run some last-minute errands with her, I thankfully decline. She says goodbye to me with a quick kiss on the forehead and sets off. "I'll be back in two hours, see you then!" As she leaves, she leaves behind a wonderful trail of scent, which I take in rapturously as I watch the door slowly fall into the lock.
Two hours is a long time when you're a teenager. So I turn on my heels and walk stealthily into her bedroom in search of the source of this beautiful scent. Excitedly, I open the chest of drawers with her exquisite fragrance collection, which is actually forbidden to me. The colorful bottles are lined up neatly on the shelf, waiting patiently and quietly for their turn. I can't suppress my curiosity and so I fumble out the bottles I haven't seen before to test them one by one. After an earlier and, for me, rather traumatic encounter with Hypnotic Poison Eau de Toilette, this time, to be on the safe side, I leave it at just sniffing the spray necks. The last remaining perfume smiles at me from an elegant bottle with a honey-brown liquid labeled "Coco Chanel". After my last test, it's clear: "That's it!". I happily spray my wrist carefully with it and neatly put the bottle back in its place as if nothing had ever happened. As I bring my wrist to my nose every minute to sniff the precious fragrance, I feel more grown up than ever before. At that moment, I realize that this must be the fragrance that stylish and self-confident ladies wear!
A few years later...
Winter is approaching and what's the saying? Personal taste changes every few years. After my signature fragrance of many years had become obsolete, I was looking for a new one. I wanted it to be mature and heavy. Expressive and classy at the same time. After a long unsuccessful search on the website of a well-known perfume retailer, I gave up in frustration. A few more days pass before the memory finally comes back to me. "The one fragrance!" I happily begin my online search, which is initially limited to the term "Chanel", as I can't remember the exact name. I can't make heads or tails of the search results and after another unsuccessful search, I head into town the next day to my trusted perfumery. All the Chanel perfumes are tested that day, until finally a honey-brown bottle catches my eye. I almost overlooked it so far down and yet I knew immediately that it was it. Smiling with happiness after this reunion, I grab the 100 ml version and look forward to reuniting with my old friend.
The fragrance:
Right from the start, the fragrance is extremely spicy. I notice the coriander and cinnamon and a peppery note, oh yes, very peppery! I also smell a hint of mandarin and lots of honey.
However, this strong opening soon subsides and becomes somewhat tamer over time. It doesn't lose its spicy character, but more floral and woody accords are added, giving the fragrance more complexity. As it progresses, the honey caresses the spicy notes more and more and gives off a pleasant, but not exaggerated sweetness. As opulent as it smells now, it lingers for hours. Apart from the subtle scent of tonka bean and incense, I find it difficult to name any other components. None of the fragrance notes pushes itself too much to the fore. Instead, they know each other's strengths and give each other enough space to develop them playfully. In the main act, the fragrance shines with a heavy lightness that envelops the wearer like a cozy scarf. For me, it is noble and beautiful throughout. After a long day, the sweet-spicy DNA is still there, with the woody notes now also lending a slight creaminess.
Conclusion:
The fragrance is still one of my favorite memories years later and will therefore always have a special place in my collection. For me, it is one of the most beautiful and sophisticated winter fragrances!

Yes, that could almost be my story, except that in my case it was my ever-chic aunt who left the scent trail that got me hooked on Coco as a young girl. Back then Chanel 19 was my signature, many years later I started collecting vintage Coco because what's in the perfumeries now is just a weak copy. But the original formulation is divine.

Yes, the vintage EdP is absolutely divine. "Back then" I combined it with the body cream in the square jar, or just the cream, and I always made a splash and felt like I was melting into Coco.
