Blanche Antoinette Rose Reneaux was born in Montreuil-sur-Mer in 1892. After marrying Bertie Arvoy, a Briton, she took the name Blanche Arvoy. In 1923, she created the perfume house Jovoy, which in the 1920s was synonymous with glamour, luxury, refinement and inspiration. The name is composed of her nickname Joe and the second syllable of the family name Arvoy.
A year later, she opened the Corday perfume house. For this, she chose the name of Charlotte Corday (1768-1793) - a noblewoman who gained fame for murdering radical journalist and politician Jean Paul Marat during the French Revolution and was executed four days later.
The first perfume released under the Corday name was called "Toujours Moi" (1924). "Toujours Moi" inspired British composer Harry Revel in 1948 to write "Perfume Set to Music: The 'Sound' of Scents," a synesthetic-musical suite in which he described six Corday perfumes. Well-known fragrances of the house were "Fame de Corday" (1937), "Tzigane / Zigane" (1947) and "Rusé" (1966).
