Hot Apple Cider

This is the scent of October.
Indian Summer in Connecticut, a trip to an apple orchard. For $10, pick as many apples as you want. Crisp McIntosh, Honeycrisp, Red Delicious, and Empire. And if you’re lucky, the day is fresh and bright, the sun shining through the red-yellow-green foliage of the trees, and on one of the gently rolling hills, you can see down into the valley and beyond to the sea.

In hand-woven baskets, pumpkins are piled up, and in the evening by the fireplace, with a glass of hot apple cider, sweet and spicy, saying goodbye to summer is not so hard anymore. Clove and coriander give a hint of winter.

Mulled cider is so autumnal and so comfortingly warm.
I don’t use it as a perfume. But starting in September, I always add a few drops to the bed linens, and memories of golden autumn days and apple pies gently lull me to sleep.

Bunny, yes, you expressed that well. The home of my childhood no longer exists. Oh, the house, the apartment are still there, but everyone has gotten older or passed away. It will never be what it once was. For any of us.

Your comment comforts me through this unfortunately not so golden autumn weather, thank you!

I think it's less homesickness and more longing. Longing for times that are gone and only return in our memories. Painfully beautiful.

It seems to me that there's a bit of homesickness in your comments.

Honestly, I love seasonal scents - just like Mulled Cider represents autumn for me, Egg Nog is Christmas. Maybe Egg Nog deserves a comment too.

Now my mouth is watering... You're right: With the right scents, autumn can only be wonderful, golden, cozy, and a cheeky promise.
