Vintage version - totally unique and just lovely when used sparingly.

When I was a girl, I remember smelling White Shoulders on the women who wore it, and I always wanted to someday be able wear it as well as they did. Now that I'm around the same age as those women were, I have sampled the current White Shoulders in the store and was so sorely disappointed, because what I smell from the bottles of today is NOT the same. To me the reformulation smells, well, funky..... a bit like cat wee-wee. I was so sure that this offending scent was not what I remembered from the 70's. So lucky, me I found a vintage bottle. Oh, glorious White Shoulders, THAT is what I remember!!! It is a creamy beautiful fragrance. The individual notes really don't stand out for me. It's blended so well. I do smell the white florals and peach, but there is something very special about the original version that I just can't explain. It's beautiful, elegant, sweet & creamy, so lady-like.

1940s Americana

I was given a large bottle 4.5 oz. original formula and this is a true floral classic. The bottle has a gold foil label and a twist off cap. I wonder about the history of the house. Did it have any other fragrances?

A magnificent tropical white floral that is perfectly blended. I generally gag on tuberose, yet this is so well harmonized that it only supports the gardenia, lilac and neroli that dominate this beauty. The drydown is amazing with mysterious spices weaving in and out of the amber. There is just enough civet to keep it sexy, yet fresh.

I remember my mother wearing this on vacation in Miami in 1972. Flip flops, big sunglasses, cowry shell necklace on a sundress and straw hat. I will forever hold that image in my mind. White shoulders is stunning.

A vintage classic that wouldn't smell offensive to 2024 noses

I tried the most recent version, in 2024 in a pharmacy. Now, onto the review: This is a powdery scent that reminds me of old-fashioned ladies' bathrooms. However, it is not a baby powder scent. I do smell light white floral sweetness - I cannot pick out what they are but I imagine it's the jasmine-tuberose-rose-gardenia combination.
I also smell neroli, the delightful bitter orange extraction. It brings needed depth to the whole concoction. I do not get any animalics or sandalwood from this 2024 version. However, I do smell slight aldehydes. I have always hated aldehydes, to be honest. They smell a bit like urine and have a heavy quality to my nose. The aldehydes are not strong enough to ruin this fragrance, though, and instead remind me of its vintage status.
I wonder what the classic version of this perfume smelled like, when aldehydes were in fashion. It must have been much stronger. This is one occasion where I'm glad for the reformulation. I think this is quite a lovely scent. It would be so unexpected and subversive for a young woman to wear this - but would not require as much daring as some of the stronger aldehydic juices of the early to mid-century, like Cabochard, Bandit, Youth Dew, or Chanel No. 5. Maybe that young woman will be me, after my no-buy is over.

Smells like Mrs. Proper tidy whity clean. Just not me.

like this, but that's all. It is a fragrance I use after I take a shower and just want to smell fresh and clean without putting much though into it. Not a scent I take when leaving the house. It has this soapy and powdery feel to it. I feel too much like Mrs. Propper whity tidy with her. It was a present from my boyfriend (and he asked already suspiciously if I even wear it at all), but I would never buy it. It is just not exciting enough for me. I thought already of using it as a room spray or for the bed sheets, but I fear I might hurt his feelings.
