Quai des Brumes - harbor in the fog. In my anticipation, a mysterious scent unfolded, maritime, with a woody, tart sweetness. With this romantic anticipation, I took the trial set out of my letterbox a few days later.

But this trip did not go as expected. Unpacked, bottled and sprayed, I found myself not in a French fishing village in Normandy, but on the other side of the English Channel. I was suddenly standing on Brighton Palace Pier. Amidst the rides and carefree ease, the pleasurable gluttony beckoned - I smelled freshly spun candy floss and candied overripe fruit.

This sugary-sweet vanilla-apple-tangerine opening, from which a slightly woody note seems to emerge after a short time, remains throughout the fragrance. Whereby "course" is not very accurate. The individual notes are very closely interwoven and remain on the skin and clothing without changing.

Quai des Brumes keeps coming to my nose as I explore the pier and awakens my desire for something more substantial and hearty. The rather long-lasting, almost sticky sweetness could have done with more of the tart, citrusy freshness of vetiver or mandarin. Without this olfactory anchor, the fragrance drifts around unsteadily, like a buoy torn loose in the harbor basin. What a pity.
