Anish Kapoor and the Blackest Black
Until recently, I had no idea that it had not yet been possible to create a completely black surface.
All previously created and seemingly completely black surfaces still reflect a small fraction of light.
I also did not suspect that my captivating passion for fragrances would educate me in this regard.
In 2014, the "blackest" black was developed, consisting of carbon nanotubes on a foil, which reflects only 0.035% of visible light.
In the art scene, only one person is allowed to work with this substance.
Anish Kapoor secured the exclusive rights from the manufacturing company shortly after its development and has since created several deep black art objects that sometimes seem to disappear in spaces.
In 2018, a museum visitor in Portugal jumped into a black hole in the floor, which, at 2.80 m deep, is not insignificant, but due to the use of the almost perfect black, did not appear realistic enough to prevent the jump.
But what does this colorless color have to do with Oud Khôl?
Thierry Wasser recently shared just a few meters away from me how Anish Kapoor's artworks inspired the new oud fragrance. Fascinated by his works and by the discovery of the supposedly blackest black, he set to work in many solitary hours in his studio to create a scent that should appear as dark as possible.
Just like the perfect black.
Thierry Wasser also understands his work as a powerful conclusion to the new oud trilogy. As a literally dark fragrance, it dominates over the rather lively Cherry Oud and the dreamily delicate Oud Nude - both works by Delphine Jelk.
Oud Khôl wants none of that. Not delicate, not lively, and not Everybody’s Darling. It is meant to be black.
The scent is quite wearable for me, but in any case conceptual. It strikes me as very dark and elusive. Smoke, darkness, leather, darkness, and only 0.035% sweet - just the deficiency that prevents it from appearing perfectly black.
I sincerely hope that this fragrance does not turn out to be a flop like the museum visit of the unfortunate Portuguese, as it is very conceptual and extremely special in the L’Art & La Matière series.
Thierry Wasser has certainly achieved his goal, and I tip my almost black hat to his craftsmanship. I now understand Oud Khôl and find it incredibly exciting. Surely I will wear it with reverence from time to time.
By the way, the museum visitor only sustained minor injuries, and the exhibition was widely celebrated as a success.
And so I also hope that such creative olfactory results do not mean a crash but are celebrated as exciting works.
