The Powerful Oud
Let me talk about one of my absolute favorite fragrances: Guerlain's Oud Khôl. I have to say right away, this is not a scent for everyone or for every situation. It's a loud, heavy, and powerful fragrance that makes a real statement.

I'm a huge fan of how Guerlain creates its oud scents, and Oud Khôl is a perfect example of their mastery. It has that strong, slightly Arabic feel that is just so incredibly complex and beautiful. It's a deep, rich, and dark take on oud that is absolutely captivating.

What makes it truly special for me, though, is the balance. There's a lovely praline note that runs through it. It isn't overly sweet or sugary; it’s more of a dry, nutty warmth that works perfectly to balance the intensity of the oud. The combination is simply addictive. I can’t help myself and I keep smelling it on my skin every few minutes when I wear it.

The performance on this is amazing. The longevity, projection, and sillage are all fantastic. When I wear it, I can still smell it on my skin the next day, and it lasts even longer on clothes. You have to be careful with the sprayer on this one. For me, 2-3 sprays is the absolute maximum; otherwise, it’s just too strong.

Because of its power, this is definitely not an everyday scent. You can’t wear it to the gym or to a calm meeting at the office—it would be far too much. This is a fragrance for special occasions, for cold weather, or for those times when you want to feel bold and enveloped in a truly stunning scent.

Overall, Oud Khôl is a masterpiece for a specific taste. If you love strong, complex, and beautifully crafted oud fragrances with incredible performance, this is one you have to experience. It’s just a lovely and beautiful creation.

A clash of the worlds
Oud Khôl is a bit of a tough one for me. For Guerlain, an oud fragrance with such a prominent animalic facet was a bit unexpected, but of course in typical Guerlain fashion they executed it quite well. Unfortunately oud tends to be a note that's hit or miss for me, and this one isn't quite for me. The fragrance opens up with a rich and dense oud note that has some smokiness to it, as well as a bit of a rubbery-animalic accord as well. As it dries it develops a chalky, smoky accord that is very similar to the smell of pencil shavings, with a bit of a sweet charcoal note thrown in. It's quite unique and definitely one of the more artistic fragrances from this line, but I think it will be a hard one to pull off on a regular basis as it's a bit brash. I am however impressed with how Guerlain describes the notes and ingredients for this fragrance on their website. They might look odd on their own, but Guerlain explains why each ingredient was chosen and how they contribute to the composition. The listed notes seem like they would clash in an obnoxious fashion, but when Guerlain describes the roles they play in the composition, they make total sense. Obviously all fragrances have this going on, but many brands never disclose this information. I highly recommend taking a look at the website for this fragrance as it's quite interesting.

So far, this is one of the only fragrances from L'Art & La Matière that leaves me unsure, but given the price I doubt that I will wear this one much outside of the samples and minis I have. This is very much a fragrance that will take an acquired taste, and although it's not awful, it's not for me. However, I do want to reiterate that I think it's a good piece of perfumery still, and very well composed, just not something I will be wearing.

Who are you ? I am you ! Who am I ?
This funny scene from Rush Hour without making sense of it somehow goes through my mind in connection with the Oud Khol ...

I can't figure out the fragrance. Like many others, you could say it smells synthetic ... Who says that synthetic ingredients are bad or cheaper than natural ones?

I don't think the characteristic style is bad in itself, the whole interaction is balanced even if it sounds crazy ... Personally, I would have preferred the praline note to be more tart and less sweet, which gives the fragrance something slightly playful.

I find it rather difficult to judge whether the fragrance is good or bad for me. The whole play of scent notes gives a similar smell to women's eyeliner without meaning the black color but only the scent direction so it doesn't necessarily make a gloomy impression.

Whether I would wear it, good question ...

The price is an absolute cheek from LVMH and is probably a huge obstacle to buying it.

Smells like art supplies. A skanky mix of gum arabic, vine charcoal, graphite pencils, a chamois cloth, and piney smelling brush soap.

This is a soapy, charcoal, praline monster. It's absolutely addicting. Powerful. Projects dominance and strength. Smells expensive. Great.
