Storm Scent
Summer.
Heat.
Distant weather glow.
Pure nature.
The thunderstorm approaches.
Glaring lightning flashes through the purple-blue-gray-black of the sky. Sultry air lies over the dusty city. Rumbles of thunder and the first drops of rain pierce the charged air, warm winds blowing across.
I stand barefoot on the overheated street, waiting for redemption.
Then - first heavy drops wet the ground, warm damp earthy smell rises. All the plants wait for the redemptive rain, it starts. Twitching lightning, thunder, deafening crash. A natural spectacle without equal - every summer anew, always fascinating.
How small we are.
A rush of rain fills the asphalt, lots and lots of water pelting down. At first the ground appears to drown, but appearances are deceiving...The pent up energy discharges, rain, wind and thunder of lightning mix in an endless wild dance.
I stand in the midst of this natural spectacle and rejoice in the long-overdue wet that now soaks the ground, almost insatiable is its thirst...
After what feels like an eternity, the sky calms, the lightning and rumbling become quieter and more distant... Further and further away the charged clouds move, but the lukewarm rain persists. It grows lighter and lesser until only drops arrive.
Then it becomes quiet.
The ground breathes.
Sunbeams make everything glisten and now warm the earth, plants and trees again.
Herb-green scents and swathes rise. Fine and warm and humid they move through the garden, mixed with soft wet nuances of flowers and wood they gently settle.
Fragrant peace.
Here now is the first review for Eau de Médiane, a fragrance that best captures this moment for me. Moist fresh basil mingles with lavender and rosemary, drizzled with fresh lemon juice. Earthy tartness swirls past crushed blades of grass, resulting in a Mediterranean liberating awakening.
Deep breath.
A few lovely little flowers mingle in the drydown, softening the bitter-green astringency.
This fragrance is said to bear a certain resemblance to Sous le Vent by Guerlain, but it does not achieve its subtlety and versatility.
Fürwahr nevertheless for me an inspiring and refreshing fine fragrance from a small Belgian perfumery.
Guy Delforge began his work in 1986, in a former artillery testing facility, in the immediate vicinity of a count's castle, not far from the citadel of Namur. In these historical casemates, the perfumer created many unique fragrances over the years, still little known here in Germany. Noble fragrance creations from essential oils mature there like good wines in large glass balloons and are professionally bottled after this maturation in the manufactory.
A visit to the website is worthwhile.
