The brave little tailor
It's familiar: you stroll through your trusted drugstore - this time the one with the two letters - to the far corner of the perfume shelf. And there they are, three bottles, prominently displayed in the new release box, as if they were just waiting to be reviewed. And because there aren't that many reviews on Parfumo yet and only Spanish and Russian reviews can be found on YouTube so far, I'll start by taking a closer look at the Essential. Because who knows how long the Hacketts will be on the shelf.

Who wants to ensnare you here:
Admittedly, the British fashion brand Hackett London didn't mean anything to me until now. That's probably because I come from the countryside, where people wear the haute couture of designer Engelbert Strauss. But back to Hackett. Founded in the early 1980s, later taken over by the Richemont Group, sold on to Pepe Jeans and, since 2020, incorporated into the Madrid-based All We Wear Group.

Hackett perfumes are produced by Tailored Perfumes, which sounds like an English perfume manufacturer but is actually a Spanish company. A contract manufacturer for other brands, including Rebook and Pepe Jeans, with headquarters in Madrid. Tim Gage is listed as the perfumer, but according to other sites, a Mr. Christian Provenzano was also involved.

Clothes make flacons:
The first thing that catches the eye is the round shape of the bottle. Even if the design might seem boring to some, it has a small background in tailoring. According to the website, the spray cap has been modeled on a traditional antique bobbin spool - let anyone say there's nothing to learn at Parfumo. But what pleases me more is the magnetic closure, such a small detail is rather rare to find in this price segment.

From the sewing box:
The top notes seem plausible, the whole thing starts off spicy/peppery. The pineapple note cannot be denied either; it stands out over the course of the fragrance and provides fruitiness and sweetness. As soon as this has faded, there is a kind of aftershave effect. Later, the fragrance develops in a direction that I like to describe as "tart". Unfortunately, I can't say to what extent this has to do with the amber-tonka bean-patchouli base notes. Perhaps it has something to do with the oakmoss in the fragrance notes, which is not mentioned here but can be found in the ingredients on the packaging. The really curious will notice two dyes on the list. Why these had to be included remains a mystery to me, especially as the bottle is tinted blue rather than transparent.

Speaking of blue... now you could assume that this is an aquatic, light summer freshness or shower gel fragrance based on the color of the bottle. But don't be fooled. The fragrance may be of interest to those who grew up with Dior Sauvage "back then" (i.e. in 2015 when it was launched) and would now prefer a grown-up fougere version of it.

The end of the red thread:
Can you risk spending 40 euros on the 50 ml? Yes, why not? The drugstore stocks are currently still well stocked. However, I fear that Essential and its two companions Absolute and Bespoke will quietly disappear from the shelves in a year or two. At least in Austrian stores, some perfumes in this price segment will no longer be restocked after a certain time. Which would be a bit of a shame. Because at the same time, better-known brands with more or less good offshoots will remain on the shelves. But that's another story.
