A hidden gem
Honoré Payan's offerings carry the hallmark of a bygone age, easily imagined as the type of fragrances that perhaps could have been found on the mirrored, ornate vanity tray of a lady in the Belle Epoque. Ambre is a prime example.
It's sweet, thick, resinous, but not in the way of syrup or candy. The labdanum really shines here, with the bergamot and orange giving it a dab of fruity tartness that keeps it from fully going into mythical or spiritual territory. It is wholly addictive. If I had to compare it to any fragrance I know, perhaps vintage Opium would come close. But I prefer Ambre.
It is very strong (the parfum is the highest concentration they offer) so one spray is more than enough to last you a day. The best part? It is shockingly affordable.
