Vintage patchouli in the forest
An earthy, moist, and balsamic patchouli at the same time thanks to a vanilla and musk background. Something a little chocolatey like the one in Reminiscence but not quite as liquorous. It has got that part of the wooded patchouli that makes me think of dried leaves and mushrooms in a good sense of the word. If you enjoy patchouli this is a beautiful and somewhat vintage construction (like the entire Honoré collection).

Authentic vintage Patchouli
Thank you to Honoré Payan! Patchouli Original is a beautiful timeless vintage scent with exceptional quality materials. The opening burst of earthy chocolaty patchouli is wonderful and the dry-down is alluring with a powdery nuance. This was my first introduction to the house and I am grateful. Patchouli Original stays true to the name as patchouli remains center stage throughout. The perfume does not have a hippie or head-shop vibe. The longevity and sillage is excellent. Also, I ordered the 100ml Patchouli 1854 which is a different perfume from Honoré Payan. According to the site, Patchouli 1854 is "Our most concentrated patchouli. With this patchouli, we decided to return to the original formula created by Mr. Honoré Payan in 1854.This patchouli is aged in a tank for 2 months. Result a patchouli where the scents are more powerful and more concentrated." I was very pleased with the Original and excited to receive 1854. Patchouli 1854 list for € 45.00 and after the additional € 33.90 for shipping to the United States, the total cost was €78.90 EUR or $94.19 USD. For the price point, it is a must have for patch lovers.

Beautifully Dark from Forest and Orient
In the classically simple bottle, there’s a wealth of fragrance. And WHAT A FRAGRANCE!! Here, I must strongly advocate for a little-known, small perfume company. Because this is not just a perfume, but art. Just the way everything is intricately woven together, with "well-aged" patchouli naturally in the foreground (which gets better and more aromatic with the duration of storage). But when I smell more closely, I have the impression that balsamic-smoky notes also play a significant role. I can make out olibanum and myrrh. One is dusty, light-smoky, the other mystical, deep, and dark-herb-sweet. A greeting from the East, whose aromas were already of great importance to the "Western world" in ancient times.
A little later, sandalwood also makes an appearance, which, if of natural origin, already forms a "small perfume" in itself. It doesn’t overshadow anything; it complements the fragrance with its woody impression. This is further confirmed by the moss that stumbles in with it. The entire fragrance progression has a very present presence. It’s as if it casually says to the wearer and "noses nearby," "Oops, here I come," without being bold, pretentious, selfish, or intrusive. It is simply THERE and does not beg for favor! It either gets it... or it doesn’t.
Quite dark, without being gloomy, hints of the Orient and Occident (northern forests?)
If my nose is not mistaken, now and then a hint of dark, unsweetened, subtle bittersweet chocolate emerges. I don’t know which ingredient is responsible for that. It harmonizes beautifully with the entire perfume.

Great Patchouli from the Niche
It took decades for me to realize that patchouli as a component determines whether I love a perfume or not. Since then, I always have at least one fragrance on hand where patchouli plays the leading role.
I stumbled upon Patchouli by Honore Payan in a tiny boutique in a charming little town in Normandy. The moderate price was convincing at first. But soon, the composition completely won me over.
Patchouli is naturally very present throughout the entire scent journey. However, the accompanying notes develop the fragrance from a certain bitterness, herbaceousness, and freshness already in the heart note towards softness and warmth. Because then sandalwood joins in. The base is pleasantly cozy and slightly gourmand thanks to rounding vanilla.
The nicest compliment I received for the scent was in front of a supermarket, by no means a romantic place. A gentleman followed me and then said, "You smell really good!" He didn’t seem like a man who constantly gives compliments to women; it rather burst out of him. It certainly made me happy.
I would like to recommend this perfume to lovers of patchouli. In my opinion, it is of high quality and can easily compete with other manufacturers. Patchouli by Reminiscence comes to mind, which I find a bit bitter at the start but has long-lasting power and a very nice base. Patchouli by Les Senteurs Gourmandes is quite nice, but I miss depth and warmth.
Additionally, I want to advocate for a small company like Honore Payan. It has been a family-run business in Grasse since 1854. I find it charming that they invest little in advertising and elaborate bottles, but rather in high-quality perfumery art. So, while I don’t have a work of art as a bottle on my dresser, I do have a scent that convinces and brings a lot of joy. Plus, they’ve outsmarted the big corporations a little.
At Honore Payan, you can conveniently order online, which should work even without knowledge of French. 100 milliliters cost 35 euros, plus 13.90 euros for shipping. That’s a lot. But considering the total, it’s a good deal.
And a wonderful patchouli experience! Just go for it!

So happy to have found out about this house. The OG Patchouli, as it was released under Les Nereides. Earthy, musty, and true to its name.

Beautiful, dark "patchouli world".
Velvety, warm,
it envelops the spirit
& the soul.
Warm, dry at the base,
kissed by vanilla.
Sensual.

Even as someone who usually doesn't connect with patchouli-dominated scents, I have to admit that this one is well done.
