Hendley Perfumes / Hewn

Hendley's new fragrance from the 'laboratory series 2020' series, i.e. a time-limited edition, and was created as a result of new ideas by Hans. HEWN, or CUTTING, 'was carved from sublime wood, softened with iris and ambient moss'. This perfume smells like a natural woodshed scent, where here and there, closer to the ground, some of the stored wood is covered with moss. The woodshed is also quite close to the sawmill, from which we can hear the smell of cut wood, and we stand among those aromas. The smell thanks to the iris also gives the impression of a light dustiness, so we have here everything that can enhance the impression of being among the cut and stored trees and their dusty chips. The perfume reminds me the closest of Silvan (Rouge Bunny Rouge), but the projection is much greater, and the durability reaches 12 hours, which, unfortunately, Silvan did not have. To sum up: a great perfume for all fans of tree industry with a projection above average and a very good durability. A must have item for all fans of wood fragrances, especially cut trees, cut trees and wood shavings. I think Pinocchio would feel at home, although the vision of a circular saw in a sawmill and the sight of wood chips would frighten him. :-)

Resinous--spicy, sharp, sweet

Hendley Perfumes Hewn is a wider re-release of the 2020 Laboratory Series creation, a highly resinous fragrance that feels sweet, sharp, spicy, creamy, and earthy, a mix of beeswax, orris, woods, and musk, primarily. The orris is noticeable and seems to be the source of sharpness, but it doesn’t make the overall perfume particularly powdery. And it’s spicy only a vague sense, not like pepper, nutmeg, cinnamon, etc. The resinous part feels like more than just beeswax, perhaps some incense, as it’s a little dark and smoky without being entirely so, vaguely reminiscent of the burnt campfire accord in Fume.

In the existing catalogue, though, Hewn is most similar to Felt in that it’s sharp and resinous, but not quite as sweet as Cola. Overall, Felt is sweeter, and Hewn is sharper/spicier, but they’re both in the “middle,” very balanced albeit strong, resinous fragrances.

As with Hans’ other creations, Hewn feels carefully put together and quite rich, yet another great original resinous creation that feels like it’ll be especially beloved on the cooler weather when its performance and character feel most appropriate. I’d probably not venture to wear this on a hot day, myself.

Hewn is available in extrait concentration, performing very well, as it’s palpably dense and projects quite a bit to start, and is priced at $250/160/85 for 50/30/15ml, so on the higher end of the line, but similar to other entries.

Overall, I love it—it’s in a class with other great fragrances like Fume, Felt, Cola, and Bloodline.

The World Behind the Roots and Meadows

A few hours away from here, Munro would ponder what he might have encountered if he had walked in the opposite direction. Perhaps a model train.
He wandered through cool weavings of roots, which had been herb-green and earthy, flowing like pearlescent threads, spun into mist over damp meadows, where honeydew beaded from wild grasses, and Munro had to smile. There, the sun grows at the ground, and the blades of hay hang in the sky.
A little further on, the moss had turned brown, perhaps also due to the sandalwood grains that the wind had carried there, golden, sweet, dry, and warm. At some point, everything was oak wood, freshly sawn planks, full of ethereal resin, shimmering like mist clouds rising to the sky, but there was nothing further here. No landscape anywhere. The wooden wall in the Munro Show. He just shrugged. It doesn’t matter; it’s very beautiful.

With "Hewn," Hans Hendley achieves a wonderfully balanced connection of herb-green yet airy light, non-powdery iris roots with a bit of earthy-moist, soft vetiver, whose sharpness is initially softened by the subtle beeswax, later by the rather lichen-like (summer) moss, and finally by the sweet-warm sandalwood. I also share DeVulgares' association with spicy hay. Early on, fresh, bright, ethereal resinous oak wood emerges beneath the wild vetiver, increasingly asserting its own sharpness where it had been taken from the grasses, until after about six hours, only the oak resin remains to define the drydown. "Hewn" lasts a good nine hours on me.
