Not necessarily impressive

In principle, I make no secret of the fact that I have my issues with Hugo Boss fragrances. While there are many brands that released remarkably good scents, especially in the 80s, even then Boss was anything but the same. To reassure myself, I tested a bit of the truly fresh essence of my aged mini.

The opening comes across as exceptionally spicy-coriander-like, almost lavishly with mugwort and tarragon. At times, it seems ethereally sharp and slightly menthol-like to coriander. It could easily have sprung from a bubble bath in a health food store. For a brief moment in the top notes phase, one might even think the perfumer was trying to lean towards Jil Sanders Feeling Man - but really only for a very short time! If it had stayed that way until the end, I would easily give it 90%.

Unfortunately, Spirit later pulls back overall, which makes it seem slightly impure. I fear that galbanum might be to blame, which smells bloated and buttery to me. But perhaps I'm completely off base - still, from the onset of the heart note, the fun would be over for me.

In the base, leather then intensively takes over, which unfortunately also comes across as somewhat synthetic and slightly bitter. The rest? More or less a gift!

It's a shame, because the Art Deco bottle had its charm. Normally, I have great respect for fragrances from the 80s, and I certainly don't have a negative attitude towards the Hugo Boss brand in general, but it has already been proven back then that their fragrances don't really work. A small consolation: at least I would prefer to wear the old Spirit rather than many olfactory new creations from the Boss house.
Let's see when something from them really impresses me!
