Not necessarily impressive
In principle, I make no secret of the fact that I have my issues with Hugo Boss fragrances. While there are many brands that released remarkably good scents, especially in the 80s, even then Boss was anything but the same. To reassure myself, I tested a bit of the truly fresh essence of my aged mini.

The opening comes across as exceptionally spicy-coriander-like, almost lavishly with mugwort and tarragon. At times, it seems ethereally sharp and slightly menthol-like to coriander. It could easily have sprung from a bubble bath in a health food store. For a brief moment in the top notes phase, one might even think the perfumer was trying to lean towards Jil Sanders Feeling Man - but really only for a very short time! If it had stayed that way until the end, I would easily give it 90%.

Unfortunately, Spirit later pulls back overall, which makes it seem slightly impure. I fear that galbanum might be to blame, which smells bloated and buttery to me. But perhaps I'm completely off base - still, from the onset of the heart note, the fun would be over for me.

In the base, leather then intensively takes over, which unfortunately also comes across as somewhat synthetic and slightly bitter. The rest? More or less a gift!

It's a shame, because the Art Deco bottle had its charm. Normally, I have great respect for fragrances from the 80s, and I certainly don't have a negative attitude towards the Hugo Boss brand in general, but it has already been proven back then that their fragrances don't really work. A small consolation: at least I would prefer to wear the old Spirit rather than many olfactory new creations from the Boss house.
Let's see when something from them really impresses me!

The Spirit of the Past...
When considering the fragrance universe of Hugo Boss, one can claim that over the course of nearly 30 years, they have catered to pretty much every clientele and taste.
There has been aquatic, spicy, sensual, sporty, and even something exclusive with the "The Collection" series.

Offshoots of the successful "Boss Bottled" and the classic "Hugo," the oh-so-typical summer flankers, and what feels like 17 "Editions" of "Boss In Motion" belong, in my opinion, to the category of "Exaggerated & Unnecessary."

Let's be honest, the glory days of the Metzingen fashion label are long gone in terms of fragrance - hits like "Number One," "Elements," "Boss Bottled," or the aforementioned "Hugo" are years behind us... every new announcement is met with a critical eye from me, after all, Boss is no longer trying to reinvent the wheel (typical "Boss apple note in every fragrance) and as Luca Turin once aptly put it - the investments, that is, the money, is no longer put into the perfume itself, but into advertising - just look at all these "celebrity face campaigns." Most recently Gwyneth Paltrow and Jared Leto.

Many years before these two and current trend phenomena, the third Hugo Boss men's fragrance was launched in 1989, which I was able to test extensively thanks to "FryBender" - thank you very much!

The bottle was designed by Hamburg designer Peter Schmidt, like many other Boss bottles, and has a classic and noble feel with its Art Deco glass architecture.
The black cap with gold accents and the golden liquid underscores this attitude.
The campaign featured a couple in evening attire dancing in front of a car.

The hood open - making the best of the situation.
"Spirit" possesses the "spirit" of the 1980s and exudes its flair and mood.
It conveys a radiant shine in the opening thanks to aldehydes and mugwort with a herbal, spicy undertone. The typical urine opening note from back then is absent - that was present and still exists today in "Number One."

As the fragrance develops, Spirit takes on a woody, floral character with a bitter anise note, which does not really turn sweet. Rather, it is a dry, minty shading.
It reminds me of dry hay and parched fields.

Thanks to all the green notes, Spirit divides me and gives me a certain skepticism. Is it a floral chypre or a mossy fougère?
At least it embodies both character traits.

In the drydown, Spirit now develops into a dry, woody candidate with aromatic tobacco and moss nuances. Extremely masculine and self-assured!

The spectacle ends within 7-8 hours and leaves me once again with that typical "feels familiar" temperament.
Surely my father had it before the impactful "Fahrenheit cut" for me ;)

Looking back, Spirit was neither revolutionary nor groundbreaking.
It lasted just 8 years, being discontinued between 1996 and 1997.
Thus, the 1980s flair remains only in Number One.
Both smell quite similar to me, although I currently have no direct comparison.
From memory, Number One seems a bit more citrusy and richer.

But I could be mistaken… reason enough for a soon comparison…

Distinct and Masculine
And again a fragrance that I haven't smelled since the 90s. Back then, I didn't like it, of course. As a young guy, one was more into Joop Homme than into such masculine scents. You can't really appreciate a good red wine at 13. Yes, back then. But don't worry. I'm not going to saddle the old nag "Everything was better back then" again. It's already been beaten to death.
*Even if it's true
*

Boss Spirit is a true men's fragrance. It starts off very spicy and herbaceous. I like it. It immediately sets itself apart from today's mainstream fragrances. I recognize an undeniable relationship with Jil Sanders Man III. This note holds on for a while. After some time, the herbal note is toned down and it becomes softer. I can't help but think of the beautiful landscapes of Provence. Sweet, as Bertel describes it, is not present here at all. An surprisingly good scent. Dominant and masculine. With this, you can still wrap a few people around your finger today. Believe me! You simply don't smell such things anymore.

The sillage, as far as I can judge on myself, is enormous. The longevity is very good. But it doesn't matter. It's no longer available. Boss produced almost nothing but rubbish afterwards.

From now on, it went downhill...
-----
Cappellusman is right. The relationship to Jil Sander Man III is exaggerated. Let's say they are more like good acquaintances who quickly say goodbye after a brief "Hello."

Low Spirit
Skylab has already pointed out: when "Spirit" was released, the fragrance world at Boss was still relatively young and in good shape, far removed from the routine faceless output of the past decade. However, in detail:

"Spirit" opens sour and bitter, primarily with mugwort, mint, and galbanum, and smells to me somewhat like how sage candies taste - I don’t mean that positively... ;-) Tarragon struggles to contribute some spice, but especially when the floral notes of geranium and lavender appear, it has a hard time; the fragrance develops almost piercingly, and surprisingly sweet, very prominent and "loud." Woody and mossy notes with amber, leather, patchouli, and sandalwood then wait in a rather dry, somewhat darkened base. Overall, a strong, sharp-bitter, at times almost piercing green-leathery chypre, somewhat reminiscent of a Gucci "Nobile."

Boss "Number One" (when it didn’t have that name yet because there was no other Boss fragrance, so vintage) still has that full-bodied, lavishly opulent, overflowing richness of hundreds of mostly naturally complex ingredients, with far more facets in the floral and spicy areas compared to "Spirit" - unfortunately, "Spirit" comes across as significantly flatter, narrower, and oddly diluted despite its loudness. For over 20 years, I have clearly preferred "Number One" as the far superior and rounder fragrance.

Gateway Drug
I can't pinpoint the exact moment; it was around 89-90: I was out and about in our little town when an old friend and schoolmate crossed my path. How are you, what are you up to, the usual small talk. Anyway, suddenly he pulled a little bottle out of his sleeve and before I even realized what was happening, he dripped some on my hand saying: You have to try this! With that, he was gone. Of course, I immediately sniffed it, and that was my revelation. It was all over for me. A new universe opened up. For someone who had only known Axe or Gammon until then, this was like holy water. The scent wouldn’t let go of me, and I had to know what it was. I grabbed the phone, interviewed colleagues, and headed to the perfume shop. Boss Spirit accompanied me for four to five years. Of course, it wasn’t worn every day, but only on special occasions. Until one day I could no longer stand it and made the fateful mistake: I THREW AWAY THE HALF-FULL BOTTLE!!! And today I could kick myself for it! How I wish I could have it back.

A soft leather fougère : herbal, aromatic and sweet.
Old fashioned but still good, the Werthers Original of aftershave.

Chronologically the 3rd men's fragrance from Boss, and for me the third best (Elements was good after that, otherwise nothing more). Mugwort monster!!!

Green forest spirit rests on a patchouli-sandalwood-leather foundation, cushioned with oak moss and an aromatic sweet-minty note.

At first, mint and soapy notes dominate, then the scent becomes spicy-floral with a hint of sweetness. Good composition.

Long ago.. it was good, herbal, woody, spicy.. something like Antaeus. That's how I remember it. Nothing fruity. Business as usual.
