Interesting Facts
If you want to buy expensive jewelry in a hurry, then you are in good hands with Cartier or Tiffany & Co. However, if you are interested in guaranteed exclusive pieces of jewelry in the high-end range and they are only made to order, you can try Joel Arthur Rosenthal, or rather: JAR.
Try, mind you, because the self-taught designer has already shown the door to one or the other potential customer, if he, for whatever reason, did not like it. Nevertheless, his jewelry pieces, of which he makes no more than 80 per year, are more sought-after than ever and regularly fetch top prices at auctions.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1943, the son of a mailman and a biology teacher did not want to become a jewelry designer, but a painter. That's why in 1966, after studying art history and philosophy at Harvard, he moved to Paris, where he thought all painters went.

Painting, however, did not turn out to be the best option. After working for a few years as a screenwriter and selling handmade embroidery, he and his partner opened a store for his self-designed jewelry in Place Vendôme in 1978, where he still welcomes his hand-picked customers.

From the beginning, his jewelry pieces have found their lovers. Among his clients are Elizabeth Taylor, Elle MacPherson and Ellen Barkin. His specialties are one-of-a-kind pieces modeled on nature, such as flowers and leaves, but also vegetables and insects, in which the gemstones are often set in blackened metal in a wide variety of shades. He sets the stones in pavé settings, which means that many small stones are set close together, creating the appearance of a continuous, glittering surface.

In the 1980s, Joel Arthur Rosenthal expanded his business - perfume was added. A stone's throw from his address for jewelry, he opened a showroom for his perfumes at 14, rue de Castiglione. And as with his jewelry, he retains complete control over his creations. He himself is the nose behind the perfumes, there is no advertising for the fragrances, there are no samples, and there are no online sales - the perfumes are sold exclusively in his store in Paris, as well as at Bergdorf Goodman in New York since 2005.
His philosophy is that his creations should not be available for purchase everywhere in the world. It would otherwise rob some of the joy and mystery inherent in them.

As for the prices of JAR perfumes, they are, how could it be otherwise, as exquisite as those of his jewelry: up to 600 euros costs a fragrance in a 30 ml bottle.

Joel Arthur Rosenthal's parents taught him that he should do what he wants in life, without compromise. And he does, both with his jewels and with his perfumes. He can afford it.
