Flechier's Fresh Crowd Pleaser...
Jean Luc Amsler Homme opens with a nose burning aldehyde blast before quickly transitioning to mild orange and bergamot citrus with hints of cool cucumber. As the fragrance enters its early heart the gentle cool cucumber breeze remains, though now as co-star, coupling with a fresh green minty violet leaf, supported by relatively sweet amber rising from the base. Things stay quite linear through the late dry-down as the amber turns less sweet and the earlier cucumber dissipates but never quite disappears, allowing just the faintest trace of oakmoss from the base to now be detectable on close inspection. Projection is very good to excellent, as is longevity at 10-12 hours on skin.
Jean Luc Amsler Homme is not the kind of fragrance I usually go for. On paper it looks to be a fresh pleasant smelling crowd pleaser with nothing in its published notes screaming "individualist" or "outstanding"... I doubt the relatively obscure composition would have ever made it on my radar for trial had I not noticed by chance the nose behind the composition, Edouard Flechier, who has yet to disappoint going-in. Now having tried Jean Luc Amsler Homme on skin it is every bit the fresh crowd pleaser type of fragrance I expected based on the published notes, showcasing its cool cucumber and green minty violet leaf starring heart duo. Don't be fooled by the published base notes of sandalwood, oakmoss and amber, as the only one of the three that really plays a significant role on skin is the amber; and even that is not a major one. Instead, the amber is used primarily to give the heart accord some sweetness and just a bit of weight, but it never comes off anywhere in the same universe as relatively heavy or thick. The linear Jean Luc Amsler Homme is a fresh, breezy, light, easy-to-wear fragrance all the way, but I find myself inexplicably drawn to its minty cucumber vibe and on hot summer days outside it really does the trick as a pleasant coolant. The bottom line is while Jean Luc Amsler Homme failed in the market place, remaining inventory is relatively inexpensive at under $30 a 100 ml bottle, making this "very good" 3.5 star out of 5 rated fresh composition a relative steal on the after-market and discounters that should be sought out if one is looking for something light and easy to wear. It may not be joining Mr. Flechier's long list of masterpieces, but his streak of winning compositions remains intact with this reviewer.
