Better than Tam Dao
I bought this yesterday and it’s so beautiful. It’s hard to say but for me is an improved formula of TamDao by Diptyque.

While (for me) TD is more about the cedar than the sandalwood, that pencil shave smell, this is creamier, fresher and performs better, altough it’s a light (but airy) scent. Those around you will notice it.

For those who don’t know tam dao, Santal by Fragonard smells of clear clean wood, along with clean and fresh note, a bit green, a bit flowery but the central note is a milky clean wood.

Head Case
With fragrances that have monothematic names, like here for example Santal, one usually thinks that one can guess what to expect, namely sandalwood or at least that ingredient plays a central role.

Most of the time this is true, but Fragonard leads us a bit astray, because the velvety smooth sandalwood does spread nicely in the top note, and this is congenially combined with the citrus notes and the spicy rosemary touch, but soon it pulls back and leaves the actual supporting roles on the main stage.

In this case, it means that the fragrance comes across as rather lemonade-sweet until the drydown, which in itself doesn’t have to be a flaw, but it blocks my enjoyment of the sandalwood too much. Unfortunately, the remaining spicy to woody notes also get lost. And at some point, you find yourself in the perceived low-price segment or wonder what this has to do with the name.

What a shame, because the opening was absolutely appealing, thanks to the contrast of subtly sparkling citrus notes, particularly the famous mandarin, and the warm sandalwood. It could have easily stayed that way for a long time, but then Santal fades away and somehow makes the emerging anticipation dull. The potential was at least present.

Hmmm.. about 90%
During my week in Grasse, I applied it three times and struggled. At first, it was very fresh due to the prominent lemon, and the base of musk and cedar made it pleasantly substantial. However, after the magical three hours, it turned into a bitterness that I unfortunately could no longer tolerate. Maybe my skin is strange; on my friend, it still smelled fresh and wearable. Overall, a great fragrance.

After the citrusy start, a dry yet velvety sandalwood scent. Bright + light, with some Mediterranean herbs. A bit boring.
