An old and dear memory

My mum had a wooden showcase in which she kept her jewelry, perfumes and beauty products. I remember I loved to look at all the exciting bottles and imagine what was in them. Sometimes, though I knew it was not allowed, I opened the doors and took out one of the jars, a piece of jewelry or maybe a perfume bottle. Then I would spend some time just sniffing the smell of whatever was in the the container. Nitchevo was one of my favourites. It had a screw cap that made it easy to open and close. And the smell was heavenly. I loved these moments, and I can easily recall the smell of this perfume- at all times.
There is so much going on here. Aldehydes, coriander - which I can not stand when it comes to food but has a wonderful smell - and gardenia. Together it creates a picture of a true perfume. For quite some years this was how a perfumes smelled in my world. I did not know any of the notes, as I do today, so it was considered a whole, a smell to me. It also triggered some questions: how was it made? Where had they found this thing that smelled like this? How did they get it into the bottle? Speaking of the bottle, it also triggered my imagination. Looking like a tower from an exotic faraway kingdom, I started creating stories about the person who wore the perfume.
Sometimes when I was really brave, I dared to dab a tiny drop of the perfume on my wrist. Then I quickly put the perfume back in the closet and ran outside. I would find a secret place to hide and sniff my wrist for the next hours. That is how I came to know patchouli. It appeared after some time, and I remember loving this note from the first time I noticed it.
Nitchevo is a huge part of my childhood memory. I am happy to have a miniature exactly like my mum’s. I smile when I look at it and I am brought back to the time of my life when this stood in my mum’s closet.
