Farina Gegenüber from Ginza
Eroica is a phenomenon; since the first contact with this fragrance, I can't let go of it. Nevertheless, I have a memory effect reminiscent of a well-known old man scent from this region. In the early 70s, the Japanese industry ruthlessly copied many things from Europe in form and appearance, with some Toyotas or Datsuns looking like an Opel Commodore or Ford Taunus. Back then, the fragrances were also heavily influenced by what was en vogue in Europe, especially France.
If one were to be unkind, one could perceive Eroica as a bold attempt to copy the good old Tabac Original by Mäurer and Wirtz; however, that would be fulfilled by Valcan a few years later. With Eroica, the initial perception reminiscent of Tabac is complemented by an underlying animalic note that strongly reminds me of "Russian Leather" by Farina Gegenüber.
It starts with a citrus-aldehydic lavender note, then becomes subtly floral with accords of rose, jasmine, iris, clove, and sandalwood. Finally, it ends in a long-lasting accord of amber, tobacco, moss, tonka, musk, and a powdery vanilla.
The fragrance is special but still very popular in Japan, where it is still sold alongside some skincare products, such as facial cream, skin soother, shaving cream, and of course, like all series from Kanebo and Shiseido, hair tonic :-)
