Can A Plant-Based Natural Composition Deliver The Goods?...
Kiori skips any opening notes to speak of, shifting immediately to its heart. The composition heart comes off as primarily moderately sweet, powdery vanilla with supporting spicy patchouli. Also present is an iris-like floral undertone, smoothing out the powder. As time passes, the spicy, slightly earthy patchouli gradually gains strength as the vanilla diminishes... During the late dry-down the spicy, slightly earthy patchouli is now the composition's focus, as the vanilla is relegated to support eschewing most of its sweetness, turning to a fine underlying powdery sheen. Projection is average, but longevity excellent at over 12 hours on skin.
Kiori's relatively sweet, gourmand-like powdery vanilla opening hour and a half was somewhat disconcerting and disappointing. With the patchouli and iris aspects mixed in, the resulting accord smelled not unlike that of vanilla laced cocoa butter, in all truthfulness. Luckily, those first couple hours are not representative of what Kiori offers on the whole, as the patchouli sneaks up on the wearer as it gradually overtakes the vanilla, while at the same time the vanilla also gradually turns less sweet. The whole transition happens right under one's nose, but it is so slow and natural that one second you think you are smelling a relatively sweet, powdery semi-gourmand, then all of a sudden you have a spicy, earthy composition with just a touch of sweetness and powder for the bulk of the composition's amazingly long life-span for a plant-based natural perfume. In truth, had the composition's presentation stayed as it was in the opening couple hours I doubt I would have enjoyed it much, but the patchouli-led dry-down really turns things around considerably, leaving the composition smelling quite impressive on the whole. The bottom line is the $78 per 7.5ml (natural plant based extrait) Kiori has a bit of a problem at the gate but finishes strong while using extremely high quality natural ingredients throughout, earning it a "good" to "very good" 3 to 3.5 stars out of 5. This one is recommended, but prepare to give the composition a couple hours to reveal its true charms.
