Madonna/Funereal Complex

Originally reviewed June 23, 2013:

Madge’s perfume smells like a house of worship.

I don’t mean this as an insult. I cannot imagine anything more serene than the scent of a House of G-d—be it a synagogue, a church, a mosque, a temple, wherever. There is something familiar yet unusual at play here that can be a real deal breaker for some and an underappreciated treasure for others. This is the second time I have tried this scent. I was unimpressed the first time I tried it. This time I found its weird beauty intriguing.

The white floral bouquet in this is overwhelming. It is the scent of a sanctuary filled to capacity with mixed white flowers. If white florals are not your thing—RUN! While the flowers are screaming for attention, incense is slowly filling the space. An hour or so later there is an odd smell I can only describe as pages in an old, worn tome. There is a quiet musk that lingers, like the scent of a few parishioners sitting in the pews. Altogether, though out of context, this is lovely but not necessarily conventional or even friendly.

I’m not entirely smitten with this scent just yet. However, I do believe a love affair can grow from this. I may have even found my serenity scent.

Update July 31, 2023:

I've had ten years to learn all the weird and wonderful facets of Truth or Dare. I've also picked up a bottle of Fracas Eau de Parfum so I've long since done a side-by-side comparison. I prefer Fracas Eau de Parfum but sometimes I just need to surround myself with a sultry, yet bookish, tuberose. For this reason, Truth or Dare is a very easy perfume to grab on the go, or as some might say, it's a *dumb* reach. There is still a house-of-worship vibe that runs as an undercurrent. Depending on my headspace, it's almost naughty (think: sinner in a holy house) or it's funereal (flowers on a casket as final prayers are offered up). It's more complex than any celebrity scent has a right to be. I think jettisoning this was unforgivable. Thank The Almighty One, I have a backup bottle.
