Stranger in the night

She was excited. For many weeks now. Her and a Max Greger concert. She had received this extraordinary gift after much pleading and begging and giving up a celebration for Walter's silver wedding anniversary for their 20th wedding anniversary.

And they would spend the evening together with their neighbors. Marlies and Günther. They even had a car. As Walter always said... Günther is a civil servant. They can afford it.
When she brought up the fact that Günther had even allowed Marlies to work, there was an argument. Walter wanted nothing to do with that. He could still support his family alone. And a woman belongs in the house, after all. Besides, they were doing, as he always emphasized, splendidly.

But only because she turned every penny three times while Walter indulged in an expensive hobby. And yet, she had managed to scrape together some of the meager household money in the last few months.

Now she had taken the bus into the city. She had already bought the new dress; now she just needed the hairstyle.

No one could have teased it higher. Extremely satisfied, she left the shop and looked at herself in the window. There it was. The bottle. She bit her lower lip. Actually, the money shouldn’t have been there at all. But for such an evening, everything should and had to be perfect. She took it with her.

When they were picked up in the evening, Marlies looked her up and down and pressed her lips together. Günther complimented her and nodded approvingly. She would have liked that from Walter too, but he had once again started a fight over money and had cut the household budget even further.

As they sat in the Beetle, the perfume released its scent. Warm and soft, it lay on her skin. Initially a bit soapy and somehow with a gentle citrus nuance, which quickly gave way to a delicate rose. And there were also other sweetish flowers, but over them lay a fine powdery and spicy veil. And slowly, a velvety woody note joined in. It settled between the flowers, which now bore small vanilla-yellow speckles, and a few of them had fallen into a shallow moss bed.
It suited her casually elegant appearance and her effortlessly charming nature.

The evening was a complete success. During the break, Günther invited her to the champagne bar, and an unknown man did not take his eyes off her. He approached her discreetly. Looked into her light brown, alert eyes. And she knew immediately, there would be no further 20 years.

Today she goes to work, drives a car herself, and still wears this, her fragrance.
Walter? Was once.

It's good that sometimes the beautiful things stay and the difficult ones go.

Very realistic depiction of the time! In my family, there's still an older gentleman named 'Walter'... but he's lonely now.

The original perfume must be wonderful. But especially your comment, which really reminds me of my childhood.

..she probably has enough household money now for more than one fragrance. It's amazing how a perfume can change your life. Thank you for this lovely trip down memory lane. I really enjoyed reading it. Great choice of words :-)

I have the body powder from Nonchalance. Not that I use it often, but it smells good! I don't think it's available anymore.

Great comment and interesting story!
I unfortunately don't know Nonchalance as a perfume, I only have it as a toilet water from the 80s. A dream scent that sadly doesn't have much in common with the currently available version. And it was a scent twin to the original L'Interdit by Givenchy, in case anyone is looking for an alternative to this hard-to-find treasure.

Unbelievable, that's how it really was in some marriages. My grandma wore it too, but in her marriage, she had the final say.

Me again...
So, Max Greger was also a pretty cool jazz musician. He started in the fifties and established a very remarkable big band that was on par with the American big bands. He performed with it for decades. Glenn Miller & His Orchestra were his big inspiration, and Max Greger could definitely hold his own against him with his big band.

Oh dear, I wish for the good that the scent had come out 20 years earlier. Everyone deserves a happy ending and to be happy.

Phew! Thank goodness, he was barely tolerable, that stingy Walter. Great story! I remember this "not having to work" from my grandmas... Emancipation is still a relevant topic. The scent, once again described irresistibly. I'm curious to see when your comments will tempt me into my first blind buy... ;-))

Your story makes me think of some real women right away... all of whom deserved such a happy ending. A wonderful tribute to this fine fragrance!

A story that touches the heart and reflects the dynamics in many families of that time! A beautifully told piece that leaves the reader smiling with a reconciliatory ending! And the wonderful perfume doesn’t get overlooked either! Congratulations!

Before I finished reading, I already knew how it would end. Just like that.
A great story that also makes you think.
I love nonchalance, but unfortunately, I never got to know the perfume.
There really was a Marlies and a Günther in my family's friend circle, and they had a VW Beetle back then.

Touching time travel story with a smart twist at the end. Is the scent of the same name (that Mom or Grandma used to have)... still (more or less) the same as the one you can find in drugstores today?

Max Greger... oh my God, I'm cracking up :-)) but he was quite popular back then for many. I wore the EDT for a while in the 80s, it was totally out. A beautiful and unique scent, and a wonderful snapshot of the time that you pay tribute to with this perfume, thank you!

My grandmother occasionally wore it. My mother gifted it to her for Mother's Day in the sixties. It was a gift box along with matching soap.
I'm really glad that this perfume is being honored so beautifully with your little story.

Thank goodness the times of men with this outdated view of women are behind us. It's even worse if there are women who have internalized it to this day.

The story reminds me a bit of my aunt who passed away in 2003 (born in 1920). Unfortunately, she never managed to break free from her stingy husband...
