Stranger in the night
She was excited. For many weeks now. Her and a Max Greger concert. She had received this extraordinary gift after much pleading and begging and giving up a celebration for Walter's silver wedding anniversary for their 20th wedding anniversary.
And they would spend the evening together with their neighbors. Marlies and Günther. They even had a car. As Walter always said... Günther is a civil servant. They can afford it.
When she brought up the fact that Günther had even allowed Marlies to work, there was an argument. Walter wanted nothing to do with that. He could still support his family alone. And a woman belongs in the house, after all. Besides, they were doing, as he always emphasized, splendidly.
But only because she turned every penny three times while Walter indulged in an expensive hobby. And yet, she had managed to scrape together some of the meager household money in the last few months.
Now she had taken the bus into the city. She had already bought the new dress; now she just needed the hairstyle.
No one could have teased it higher. Extremely satisfied, she left the shop and looked at herself in the window. There it was. The bottle. She bit her lower lip. Actually, the money shouldn’t have been there at all. But for such an evening, everything should and had to be perfect. She took it with her.
When they were picked up in the evening, Marlies looked her up and down and pressed her lips together. Günther complimented her and nodded approvingly. She would have liked that from Walter too, but he had once again started a fight over money and had cut the household budget even further.
As they sat in the Beetle, the perfume released its scent. Warm and soft, it lay on her skin. Initially a bit soapy and somehow with a gentle citrus nuance, which quickly gave way to a delicate rose. And there were also other sweetish flowers, but over them lay a fine powdery and spicy veil. And slowly, a velvety woody note joined in. It settled between the flowers, which now bore small vanilla-yellow speckles, and a few of them had fallen into a shallow moss bed.
It suited her casually elegant appearance and her effortlessly charming nature.
The evening was a complete success. During the break, Günther invited her to the champagne bar, and an unknown man did not take his eyes off her. He approached her discreetly. Looked into her light brown, alert eyes. And she knew immediately, there would be no further 20 years.
Today she goes to work, drives a car herself, and still wears this, her fragrance.
Walter? Was once.
