Cool jazz in the club today. Free jazz and jazz rock again tomorrow.

I kindly received the Replica - Jazz Club as a sample addition to a souk purchase. I don't actually "own" this perfume from Maison Margiela. But at least I can try it out and observe it at home at my leisure.

Replica - Jazz Club is a fragrance for men that is classified here on Parfumo as sweet and spicy. That fits my preference.

The fragrance pyramid on Parfumo is as follows:
Top notes: pink pepper, neroli, primofiore lemon
Heart notes: rum absolute, java vetiver, clary sage
Base notes: vanilla, tobacco absolute, styrax

I am particularly excited about the rum note and the base note with tobacco and vanilla. Replica - Jazz Club is very popular here at Parfumo. Approximately 3,800 Parfumo members are registered as Replica - Jazz Club users. Of these, 18% are female fans. The fragrance note is 7.8.

I first sniff the small pocket atomizer of the bottling and smell sweet residual notes.

When I spray it on, I get the impression of a sweet lemon, barely citrusy, complemented by the sweetness of bitter orange blossom. I cannot recognize the listed pink pepper. The fragrance is very restrained, despite 2 sprays. Does it need an incubation period first?
Excursus: Neroli, blossoms of the bitter orange tree. I was in Dubrovnik at Easter. The bitter orange trees were in full bloom there. I can say, a mega-sillage. And beautiful to look at, as the tree bears fruit and flowers at the same time.

After half an hour, the fragrance continues to demand attention. The sweetness changes direction with the heart note. Yes, a little rum, but rather restrained. The result is an interesting floral-balsamic, even slightly smoky sweetness that I couldn't categorize at first. But a look at Wikipedia regarding clary sage and vetiver oil enlightens me. With this background, it is easier to understand the heart note. Very pleasantly sweet, initially without any hint of vanilla.

Where is the perfume? I have to really waft it to get a scent in front of my nose. Ok, with the base note comes vanilla and tobacco and also something resinous from the styrax. But everything is still very, I have to say, too restrained. I actually have much more fragrance from my much appreciated, but 5 times cheaper UAE fragrances. Let alone a comparison with the Tobacco Vanille Eau de Parfum which almost screams for attention with a similar fragrance combination. However, the sweet line continues with the perfume, again in a new variation. The concept of the fragrance is already coherent.

Longevity and above all sillage are poor to mediocre, as indicated. But perhaps this is also due to the bottling, which comes in a small, cheap pocket atomizer and is half empty? Perhaps the sample is simply already overstocked? To put my "judgment" into perspective. Of course, I can't evaluate the bottle with my small bottling either.

The fragrance is so understated that you can wear it anytime and anywhere.

Summary
At least in my sample, the fragrance has real difficulties getting started. The base note is a pleasant sweetness with a changing composition. With that in mind, I now understand its popularity with female perfume wearers. It doesn't seem spicy to me. I didn't recognize the pink pepper. I also didn't notice the accentuated rum accord. The drydown is okay, but not amazing either. Overall, I'm rather disappointed. I won't be buying the fragrance after this experience. Maybe spray it on again in the perfume department store ...
