on the tissue of my skin i can read the architects’ drawing (“see here”, Gentile says, “how the triangulation of bitter orange, black pepper and frankincense evoke so truly the olibanum tears”) yet my eyes are drawn upward as the sillage lifting from my skin builds around me the realised arching stone ecclesiastical space in the moment of receiving the first fragrant consecrating curls of ignited incense tears (like nothing else I’ve tried, so true to that first moment when the heated resin’s surface shimmers, changes state and vapour rises floats wafts disperses… i am moved beyond the open side of this chapel, out to the true cathedral of rocky cliff where cling dry and salt adapted plants above a peaceful sea. back down on the skin that’s all there too: inhale hints of dusty mastic flint and salt, exhale look around, was there a chapel? or was it a cave in a cliff? a rock overhang? or merely a sitting stone? they all recede. the fragrant architecture has done its job: providing a peaceful pause for contemplation, thanks and awe… brief benediction before return to the real prayerful reverent task of living as but one among earth’s creatures
