Gershwin
“Gershwin” is Maria Candida Gentile's most citrusy perfume I've sampled so far. It contains a rather unconventional combination of various citruses and incense, which led me to dubbing the perfume “liturgical citrus”. Allegedly, Ms Gentile utilises a large amount of natural ingredients in her perfumes (according to some accounts they're 100% natural, which I would definitely take with a pinch of salt). I'm not sure I'd be able to tell the difference between a natural molecule and a synthetic one, but “Gershwin” does smell “natural”. The citruses in it are not overdone (there's no acidic sourness irritating your nostrils here); on the contrary, they exude a pleasantly zesty aroma, bringing to mind their flesh as well as their rind. After a while, incense arrives on the scene. In my opinion, it is the intriguing citrus-incense combination which prevents the scent from being categorised as yet another citrus-based summer cologne. The combo is improved even more by cloves in the base.

Nevertheless, “Gershwin”´s greatest strength (a high amount of natural notes) is, at the same time, its biggest drawback. On my skin, the fragrance has a weak sillage, not to mention its poor longevity. It basically evaporates almost completely within 2-3 hours. At this price range, I'd expect much more convincing results in these two departments. That being said, “Gershwin” is a fine scent that every perfumista ought to try out.

mcg has a wonderful gift for making incense compositions sparkle - with similar scent profiles Tauer’s Incense Extreme is a blanket, this is a transparent swirling veil - whilst Sorcinelli’s Plein Jeu synthesizes, this transsubstantiates.

Let us Spray…
on the tissue of my skin i can read the architects’ drawing (“see here”, Gentile says, “how the triangulation of bitter orange, black pepper and frankincense evoke so truly the olibanum tears”) yet my eyes are drawn upward as the sillage lifting from my skin builds around me the realised arching stone ecclesiastical space in the moment of receiving the first fragrant consecrating curls of ignited incense tears (like nothing else I’ve tried, so true to that first moment when the heated resin’s surface shimmers, changes state and vapour rises floats wafts disperses… i am moved beyond the open side of this chapel, out to the true cathedral of rocky cliff where cling dry and salt adapted plants above a peaceful sea. back down on the skin that’s all there too: inhale hints of dusty mastic flint and salt, exhale look around, was there a chapel? or was it a cave in a cliff? a rock overhang? or merely a sitting stone? they all recede. the fragrant architecture has done its job: providing a peaceful pause for contemplation, thanks and awe… brief benediction before return to the real prayerful reverent task of living as but one among earth’s creatures

An Olfactory Rhapsody
Gershwin is a fragrance designed to evoke the effervescent and groundbreaking spirit of the American composer. Much like Gershwin's music, "Gershwin" is a unisex eau de parfum with a vibrant and contemporary fragrance composed of bright citrus, compelling woods and subtle warmth.
It is an olfactory experience that suggests the sun-bathed hills of Sicily and the dizzying energy of New York City.
Going beyond any situation associated with its namesake, "Gershwin" is a modern and original fragrance with the low-down freshness and complexity that gives it an edge.
It is ideally a unisex fragrance. It is something to select casually for daily wear and for someone who likes a refreshing non-obvious citrus fragrance. "Gershwin" is an energizing, surprising composition that, just like its eponymous composer's music, leaves an impression that remains.

A Love Supreme
A Love Supreme is the most famous recording of jazz legend John Coltrane. The album, recorded in December 1964 and released in 1965, is considered by many experts to be the greatest jazz recording of all time. Much more than George Gershwin, who is more of a classical composer, Coltrane's A Love Supreme stands for jazz in its purest form. Maria Candida Gentile's "Gershwin" cleverly represents the idea of this music, as improvisation with all its surprising turns is reflected here olfactorily: bitter-sharp hesperidic notes in the opening, a shift to pepper, almost simultaneously bright, sharp incense without a sacred component: it is quite profane here. The biting, perhaps somewhat austere scent in a cellar club.
The water flower (see ingredients) likely refers to the anemone. This modest little flower is rarely used in fragrances. What does it smell like after maceration or distillation? It won't really assert itself against the louder tones of incense, pepper, and citrus notes anyway. Just like the sycamore, the American plane tree. Whatever the case: wood(wind) instruments are in harmony.
For me, the combination of these tones in the heart and base notes creates a hay-like melody, somewhat sharp but still fascinating, initially loud, a bit shrill, then gradually quieter as the night grows longer.
Whether Gershwin or Coltrane: the scent is certainly something of a solitaire, even though there are now so many incense fragrances. It at least does not conform to the mainstream but tries to take different paths. That deserves respect and is pleasing. Even if one needs time to acclimate when it comes to jazz, especially with A Love Supreme.

Rhapsody in, well, what? Definitely not blue!
"Someday he’ll come along
The man I love
And he’ll be big and strong
The man I love
And when he comes my way
I’ll do my best to make him stay"

For me, this song is still the most famous by Gershwin, and it fits very well with the creation by Maria Candida Gentile.

Like Cinabre, Gershwin also carries a fine trace of nostalgia.

In Gershwin, the olfactory main theme is cool incense.

The perfume opens with a variety of citrus notes and a good pinch of pepper. This makes the opening pleasantly sparkling.

The incense announces itself quite early, and the blandly named floral notes don’t really become floral on my skin. The heart feels more herbaceous and aromatic, and I can imagine everything and nothing under a water flower.

The best part of Gershwin is the base! Lots of cool incense surrounded by clove and wood.

Somehow, I can't assign a color to this creation. One thing is for sure, blue does not smell like Gershwin. More like gray-green, if anything.

The longevity is quite good, and like Cinabre, the sillage is rather reserved.

Whether the scent fits the overall work of Gershwin, I can't say, because I don't really have much of a connection to jazz.

Almost a "Rhapsody in...green & black": citrusy-spicy-smoky with an aromatic touch and a vibrant soul . Only for true rétro lovers!

Mediterranean incense, mineral, sparkling & bright, gently grounded, in harmony with resinous coniferous wood & the oil of green citrus fruits.

Wonderful tension between citrus notes and incense: peppery spice and gentle floral tones in between: A Love Supreme (John Coltrane).

Nothing fits together for me here. The whole thing smells salty, metallic, and distinctly urinous. More than unpleasant.

Pepper, spice, incense, woods & a somehow metallic note create a fresh scent that doesn't last long.

Uuuh, it gets musty here! The strange salty-sweet-fresh Maria Candida Gentile note turns really bitter with the wild mix, almost fecal.

Powerful and natural, but feels a bit contrived. Although not listed - Immortelle spicy and intense - from top to base note.

Smoky, woody, neither floral nor balsamic, not powdery either, I didn't notice any citrus fruits. Strong quality, tendency: masculine.
