Sharks of the City
The older ones among us, especially the cinephiles, may remember the film with Paul Newman as a pool player. Although the scent has nothing to do with the movie, the name and the label somehow evoke this association.
Our City High here is neither playful nor considered a scam, but rather follows its program from start to finish. What predominates is an extremely fresh, fruity, and floral potpourri of various olfactory impressions from the officially listed fragrance notes. Sometimes the orange takes center stage for a moment, then it’s the mint, the geranium, the grapefruit, or a bit later the lavender. All the others are present, but more like supporting actors in the background.
Personally, I enjoy it when the fruity accents come forward, less so when it’s the green floral nuances. Both blend together, and one gets the impression that aldehydes are also in play. While wearing it, I was partly reminded of Chanel No 5 with a handful of sweet fruity notes. Perhaps that’s why I found the scent relatively feminine, but still okay enough to test on a hot summer day.
It cannot be denied that City High does not come across as natural, yet it employs its artificiality so skillfully that one does not notice this little detail. That is quite remarkable. It has talent, but it lacks character.
And here we come back to the film, as this is exactly what Paul Newman’s character Eddie Felson, or “Fast Eddie,” is accused of when he initially loses to his great rival Minnesota Fats.
However, unlike “Sharks of the City,” City High will unfortunately not become a classic and will sink into the multitude of many perfumes.
