Perfect!
A perfect example of a fully deserved hype, and I’m surprised this doesn’t get more. Alongside Richard James Savile Row, probably the best British contemporary fragrance for men I’ve smelled in years, although the nose is French. Ironically, given Fredéric Malle is involved (with what role, precisely?), I think that in some way Mark Birley for Men smells “more Malle” than most of his own label’s scents. Many of them are in fact way cheaper and duller than this, which on the contrary is just stunning, both quality, refinement and creativity wise. “Nicher” than most of niche. Citrus, lime, black pepper, crisp smoky woods, some peculiar sort of breezy and “grey” powdery violet notes: actually a seemingly simple structure, but smelling completely unusual, modern, unique and somehow very “dimensional” in the way the notes unravel and evolve. On paper it may seem just another violet-woody cologne with some fresh top, while it isn’t really. It’s just totally different from what you may expect, and briefly put, I have not the slightest idea of how to describe it. It’s just “new” and very unique as a whole.

Probably a sort of “metallic sparkling” aura would define the most immediate of its peculiar features, followed by a sort of aldehydic-musky “dry clean laundry” nuance (due to violet, musk and woods, I guess) which for example you also find, in a similar but way bolder incarnation, in Penhaligon’s Sartorial – and finally a sort of subtle saltiness providing a delightful, very realistic watery-sea feel. But it’s actually the way they work together which is just brilliant. It’s distinguished yet very casual and informal. The citrus-lime top accord alone has some very interesting features as well, as it smells very tangy, fresh, but somehow very robust, bold and very long-lasting, still without smelling like everlasting mosquito repellent. It’s very natural, bright, vibrant and almost kind of fizzy, with a bright freshness that seems always about to fade away, and yet it lasts for hours. It’s very substantial but totally weightless and bright. And the middle and base notes are just great as well, the way violent and woods blend is so effortless and mellow – probably incense has a key role in smoothening the accord and making it smell just as a sophisticated nondescript “mist” of grey-purple nuances. To cut it short, Birley for Men has them all: it’s very unique yet completely versatile and un-challenging to wear, it’s very pleasant, the quality is outstanding and it performs surprisingly well (I disagree with the lack of longevity complaints, it’s very discreet but quite long-lasting). It’s a joy both to explore and to just spray liberally and forget about it. Brilliant.

An Underrated Gem...
Mark Birley opens with a beautiful slightly sparkly lemon and bergamot tandem. The lemon remains into the heart notes, but becomes increasingly creamy and slightly powdery as the citric sparkle at the open disappears. Underneath the lemon remnants lies a very nice violet note that adds some real differentiation from your typical citrus scents, underpinned by base notes of clean vetiver, sandalwood and light musk. Projection is below average and longevity is poor.

Mark Birley is quite the pleasant surprise. It is very light and subtle, while the slight powdery lemon is quite captivating and distinctively different from most citrus scents. There is a slightly off-putting almost ammonia-like undertone beneath the powdery lemon heart notes that could scare away some, but it really is not unpleasant at all and is certainly not the focus of the scent while successfully keeping one guessing as to its origin. Even though the base has a hint of sandalwood in it, the scent never is sweet, instead using the also present vetiver to convey a bit of slight earthiness to the composition. To close, with names like Bourdon and Malle associated with Mark Birley for Men, greatness is to be expected and in this release it is nearly achieved. The excellent smelling Mark Birley for Men earns a strong 3.5 to 4 stars out of 5 rating and an easy buy recommendation.

Serious citrus
Mark Birley for men is a citrus based fragrance. It comes to me as rather mature (as opposed to playful), dry, dusty, dirty and bitter. There is this sharp smell that you get when squeezing the skin of mandarin.
Overall this fragrance is quite unique, as I don't know anything similar.
To be used for formal occasions. I quite like it, but find it a tad bit boring as well.

Fresh-Spicy Summer Evening
Actually, citrus scents are not really my thing, because they all somehow end up smelling the same without much variation, at least among those I have had the chance to experience so far. There has only been one citrus fragrance that could convince me, and that was Terre d'Hermes. I liked this warm-spicy-woody note, which did not convey that citrus uniformity. I would also categorize Mark Birly for Men in this "surprise" category. The club founder of London's "Annabel's, Mark's Club, and Harry's Bar" has managed to teach me a lesson for the second time regarding citrus scents. The opening of this fragrance consists of lemon and the slightly soft, sweet, and milder mandarin, which also comes across as a bit mineral to me. It is definitely not that refreshing wipe note that I have perceived so often in such fragrances. To this soft-citrusy-mineral beginning, a bit of warmth and spice quickly emerges in this scent, which immediately conveys that it is different. A warm and pleasant nuance of fresh meadow in the evening blends into this fragrance. It has a very calming effect on me and leaves a cozy feeling of deep relaxation behind. I attribute this sensation to the carrot seed, as I have read that carrot seeds are said to have such an effect and were known and used for this calming effect in the past. I could not detect the association with the aphrodisiac that is also attributed to carrot seeds. In any case, I did not expect such a pleasant scent progression, which gains a beautiful warm scent color with nuances of fine leather and wood and is further completed. The finish of this exceptionally fragrant scent feels very warm, almost a bit balsamic with a tendency towards spicy freshness with a hint of soft, delicate leather.
A thoroughly successful modern classic that brings a lot of joy, not just to its wearer.
It is also a lovely feel-good scent for summer when a rainy day dampens the mood; it manages to provide a bit of comfort and relaxation.
For me, it is also well-suited for women because it is not too masculine. A beautiful alternative for the warm season.
No intrusive sillage and a longevity that is very discreet but still present.

A future classic at a moderate price
From the brand Mark Birley, there is only one fragrance - a good sign! It is a seemingly ordinary Eau de Cologne for men.

And the scent initially presents itself as such. Bergamot, mandarin, lemon, and behind them the usual base notes that are not bothersome. You know it. One might want to set Mark Birley aside.

I had initially done just that. However, weeks later, I noticed a rather peculiar scent at my desk. Sometimes it was there, then it was gone. Slightly metallic, fresh, but also reminiscent of edible greens - lovage, fennel. I'm not sure if absinthe would fit as well.

My search revealed the truth - my sample vial of Mark Birley had leaked. What a shame! At least I had now discovered the true character of the fragrance. So I reordered the sample and can now write this comment.

This truly spectacular scent hides a bit. At first, you only have this classic Eau de Cologne on your skin - citrusy and with a bit of freshness in the background. In the freshness, one can already recognize a modern, individual note, but overall it seems to be just another generic Cologne. It takes a whole hour for the inner values to reveal themselves. The citrus notes are gone, and suddenly this metallic fresh scent emerges, almost aquatic. It is explained by the heart notes, and I suspect the carrot seed is primarily responsible here. A hint of leathery notes is also recognizable. Violet is, after all, a mysterious, versatile flower, and it may also play a role here in traces. But I believe there are surely still important ingredients being withheld from us.

This spectacular note is very similar to the perfume Skarb by Humicki and Graef. While it has an almost unbearably strong presence there, coming across quite pure and settling into the skin and clothing of the wearer for days, it remains much more discreet with Mark Birley. Above all, it is much fresher and more wearable here than there. It is far more successful here. Even though I already own a similar perfume with Skarb, I have decided to purchase this one. It will be my next office scent. The price is also pleasing. At €56 for 75 ml (or €89 for 125 ml), this fragrance falls into the mid-price segment. However, you will neither find it in the common perfume chains nor can it be placed on the same level as designer fragrances in this price range. This perfume is not rare, though. You can find it in well-known online shops for niche fragrances, but also in many perfumeries that carry high-quality products: Brückner in Munich, Vollmar in Bonn, etc.

In short, it is a fresh-spicy leather scent, but one of the very few leather fragrances that I like. I believe it already has a certain following. I consider this fragrance to be one of those that people will be enthusiastic about for many years to come. It will surely accompany us for many years. It has only been around since 1996, so I would like to call it a classic candidate.

I really appreciate this scent, an old-school citrus scent. The problem is I can't seem to find the time to use it. thinking about selling

Subtly leathery, lightly woody, charmingly unobtrusive, underrated & therefore exciting, as it’s away from hype & fuss. Stylish.

Muted sweet mandarin, zesty lemon. Uniquely fresh-spicy with leather, violet, green-woody accents, metal. And a hint of aquatic.

Has the impression of a Cologne character. Subtle, not intrusive. It floats alongside you. Unique. Citrusy-woody.

Authentic lemon, a bit of mandarin, bright leather, and wood.
Sillage could be better, sometimes scent accents pop up, which is nice.
