in the fragrance school
Today, my friend and I swore off indulgence while shopping.

Just looking - no touching - was the motto.
Stylish shoes and T-shirts were eyed but left alone.
Well, okay, a book ended up in the bag - but education is not a consumer product.

Oh, Marni Spice! A little spritz should be allowed.
A saleswoman appeared out of nowhere and asked with a stern expression what I was perceiving.
I straightened up, like in school after being called on.
Pepper, ginger, cardamom - was my brave answer.
The lady nodded encouragingly at me. And what about the cinnamon?
Yes, sweet cinnamon also reached my nose.
A nice spicy opening - and pleasantly light.
And what next? - the teacher wanted to know.
Full Austin roses, emphasized by bright jasmine.
All enveloped in soft patchouli.
The "teacher" seemed satisfied - and so was I.
Marni Spice gets a solid 2 from me, my grading escapes my knowledge.

But I couldn't resist the rosy spice of Spice and treated myself to a little bottle as a reward.

Please, a spice without spices...
Anyone who knows Yogitee, this infusion that consists solely of spices (black pepper, cardamom, ginger, cloves, cinnamon), might remember their first encounter with it.
My "first time" was quite a shock. As an average Central European who avoided spicy foods, had no experience with Indian or Ayurvedic cuisine, and considered tea to be a mild Darjeeling, at most an intense Assam, I felt a sense of horror. Was this supposed to be tea? This spicy brew?
Only later did I learn that the tea with milk and honey was indeed much more drinkable... Since then, I can't imagine being without this "brew." Especially in winter, there's hardly anything better to warm you from the inside and get your circulation going.

I had to think back to that moment when I first perceived Marni Spice.
The scent starts with a powerful, almost overwhelming cloud of cardamom/pepper. I must unfortunately say that it has headache potential, which is why I don’t wear the fragrance too often. Cinnamon and ginger are weakly or not at all perceptible. The spook lasts for about a quarter of an hour, then the overwhelming spices are completely gone. I am quite grateful for that! This makes it more of an autumn/winter fragrance.
If I had encountered the scent on a test strip, it would never have made it into my collection (instead, I bought it blindly in the souk from dear ChaiTee (!)).

Once the top note is gone, a fine composition reveals itself, featuring a restrained yet confident rose, a very subtle jasmine and mimosa note, underpinned by patchouli, which provides the necessary depth.
I fancy that the scent bears the hallmark of an elegant Lauder fragrance. Perhaps that’s because the Marni fragrances seem to be produced by the Lauder Companies.

The longevity is extremely good. I can still clearly perceive the heart and base after 6 - 7 hours.

When it comes to the rating, I am conflicted. I really like the scent - once the intense top note is gone. And yet, it is that very note that defines the "Spice" in the name.

One last word about the packaging: unfortunately, it does not convey a quality impression. The brand name "Marni" is printed in such a cheap-looking, poorly flowing manner that I initially thought it was a replica and not an original. I find that quite disappointing, as the perfumes of this brand are not exactly inexpensive.

Something is not right
Either with my nose or with the fragrance.
How do I come to that?
I read the ingredient list and the comments and think this fragrance could appeal to me.
Spices, cinnamon, patchouli, musk - what could go wrong?
I order the fragrance - blind. I receive the fragrance and spray it on.
And I smell something. But not what is listed in the ingredients.
No pepper - neither black nor pink and no other spices, especially no cinnamon.
One could say that I am not a specialist in the different colors of pepper; this statement definitely does not apply to cinnamon. I know cinnamon and I love cinnamon. Cardamom smells - as far as I know - also somehow different; well, maybe there’s a bit of ginger in there.
So the top note is not as expected.
In the heart note, I can't identify any roses, but I'm not a rose specialist.
I don't really miss jasmine - jasmine is not really my thing.
I should recognize patchouli and musk in the base, but they don't stand out to me either.
So, what do I smell then?
At first, I noticed a similarity to "Suddenly Woman I," which is said to have a certain resemblance to the famous "Chanel No.5." One of the few fragrances from the aldehyde direction that I consciously know and - probably unconsciously - associate with the image of a lady in a brown fur coat. Thus, I think it is the aldehydes that I encounter in this fragrance. And that is just not my taste. I am not a lady and I don’t have a (brown) fur coat either. I will probably never become a lady and I don't need a fur coat. And certainly not a brown one.
It may be that the fragrance is not bad, but if I get a fragrance with the ingredients listed above, which also carries the term 'Spice' in its name, and I can't identify any of those ingredients, the fragrance has missed its target.
It’s not for me and it can move on.
Postscript: Maybe I should also mention that the really pretty bottle is packaged in a quite appealing little box. That earns a small extra point.

Magical Dark Rose with Spice.
Imagine sitting in the evening twilight and warm air in a rose garden, relaxing and breathing in the spicy-floral air, enriched with fragrance from an afternoon rain shower and the sun that followed. The rose bush to your left has strikingly dark red, almost purple flowers. It is an old variety, where the scent is still original. This smell feels as dark and magical as the color of the blooms. And next to this beautiful rose garden stands a greenhouse, inside which exotic spice bushes grow. The door is wide open and the gentle wind carries the aromas of the pepper, cardamom, and cinnamon plants to you, mixing with that of the roses. Slowly it gets dark and "Marni Spice" follows the example of the day's progression. Patchouli joins in, exuding its mysterious aroma. The night is also for dreaming, even without sleeping, and scents can create such images. They come directly through the nose to the brainstem, which is also responsible for memories, feelings, and imagination..... I never thought a "modern" fragrance could please me so much and not be a direct "mainstream" scent. Because "Marni Spice" definitely has its own character. However, it is also not exactly a pronounced "niche fragrance." Something for dreamy noses and definitely suitable for summer, as it doesn't come across as too "heavy" despite good longevity and acceptable sillage. And it doesn't become annoying over time, as this "Marni" has a mysteriously interesting scent progression. By the way: It is available for 29 euros for 30 ml (instead of the regular 59 euros) in TK Maxx stores.....worth it!!!

Little Treasure
“Marni Spice” is actually my first blind buy after I was able to test a sample of “Marni” and was completely taken with it! Unfortunately, “Marni” is quite a bit more expensive than “Marni Spice,” and while browsing online, I discovered a good deal on the latter and jumped at it. The bottle is girlishly cute with white dots, and visually does not necessarily convey what it has to offer olfactorily.

The scent starts incredibly fresh and at the same time spicy-sharp; I can clearly smell the ginger. I can't detect cardamom and cinnamon, instead there is a slightly plastic note that unfortunately keeps peeking through during the top note. Luckily, the ginger also makes an appearance now and then, along with something spicy that I can't quite define.

The top note is overall very subtle, if not to say weak, so absolutely no punchy start.

In the heart note, floral accents are added, and overall the scent even becomes stronger, which I find an interesting variation. I’m not really a fan of flowers in fragrances, but the combination of rose, jasmine, and mimosa is very skillfully crafted here. The jasmine remains very subtle in the background, as does the mimosa; I primarily smell the roses, which are very soft, feminine, and delightful.

In the base note, my beloved patchouli appears, a light, beautiful variant, not the cellar-dungeon patchouli. It is accompanied by resinous and spicy notes, and the rose is still present.
Musk is also listed, but fortunately, I cannot perceive it.

“Marni Spice” is a very subtle, skin-close scent with low sillage. I think it is a perfect office fragrance that gently caresses the wearer but does not fog up the colleagues. For me, it is rather feminine, but why shouldn’t a man want to smell like this too? The perfume has something very soft, mild, which I find very enchanting. The combination of spices and flowers is very well done here.

For my taste, all these fragrance notes could be much, much stronger, but for the price, it is acceptable. I deduct a small point for the slight plastic note at the beginning and the low longevity, which at about three hours is unfortunately far too short. I consider “Eau de Parfum” a bit pretentious; the fragrance concentration is more akin to an Eau de Toilette. Nevertheless, it is a great scent that will be joining my collection. Now I just have to stop myself from buying all the Marni fragrances in a shopping frenzy :-)

Addendum: Unfortunately, the “slightly plastic note” that I only noticed on the periphery during the one-spray test developed into a whole stack of plastic bags fresh from the factory when I wore the perfume. I have no idea what this strange “scent” note could be. However, I still find the rest great. All that’s left is to hold my nose and push through.

Modern, spicy, yet light enough not to be overwhelming in summer. Great mix, wonderful scent. Currently - May 2016 - 29 euros at TKMAXX.

Spice in a different way: bright, friendly, and with a citrus touch. It forms a charming, delicate liaison with the flowers. Super nice in summer.

Lightly peppery rose, accompanied by other spices. Not overwhelming, making it perfect for the last warm days in September/October!

Less zesty than the original. More rosy. Benzoin acts like a softener. Maybe too transparent in winter, despite cinnamon and cardamom.

Do I only smell aldehydes? My daughter says it smells like an "old person." I can't recognize any ingredients from the list above. Interesting.

Quite a thin little water with very light, spicy hints. Unfortunately, it lacks something powerful. Spices brewed with a lot of water.

The opening reminds me of the bath additive "Herbs." Unfortunately, it's only nice at the start. It becomes powdery-floral and is hardly noticeable anymore. What a pity.
