Today I'm going to Maxim's...

it's very intimate there. I address all the ladies informally, calling them by their pet names. Loulou, Chouchou, Frufru....... A homage to Johannes Heesters. You can think what you want of him, but he still has a gigantic voice (now he is probably very ill, but at least he is 107), even if some nasty voices claim he was last screwed to the floor of the stage.
Maxim's is Can Can for the nose! A bit of a courtesan, a bit of a gentleman, and somewhat shady. At the beginning, I first perked up my ears, but when I get a classic like this under my nose and have read the pyramid, I automatically perk up my ears while testing. Yessss, Can Can! Maxim's rushes in and the girls throw their legs up. Citrus, fruits, the years from 1899-1910 are poured over you. It fades relatively quickly and then Maxim's becomes finer, more floral, and more refined. With such complex old scents, probably only the perfumer himself can smell what he has mixed in. But the dense and drastic floralness is unmistakable.
At first, I thought Maxim's was an old Chypre (the top note suggested that), but the heavy sweetness and opulence of the base reveals an old and somewhat dusty, decadent Oriental. An impressive scent! Dodo, Frufru, Coco, I address all the ladies informally... (I do that anyway)! "I whip out the top hat, throw the white scarf around my neck, and leave the stage humming."

Then I'll give a round of applause ;) - after Corona, this is the first fragrance I can smell again.

Unfortunately, it never became a bestseller.

In 1981, Pierre Cardin bought Maxim's and thus the brand. He probably wanted to connect with the great tradition and image of the house. Didn't really work out, I guess.

...at least it's still open today. The ambiance has become a bit dusty over time, but it still remains a cult spot that wealthy tourists love to visit.
I had a fantastic evening there in 2016; it felt like stepping into another world behind the thick curtain of the entrance....
