School of Aramis

Fragrantica attribute this to Dominique Ropion but I doubt it myself.
Maxim’s pour Homme is an aromatic leather chypre; old school; a bit like Aramis without the bouyant head and with gritty and fruity notes in its place.
Underneath, it’s dark and dry, a moss-patchouli-amber like a Bernard Chant (Aromatics Elixir, Cabochard, and of course, Aramis). But, because Maxim’s is a bit dull compared to (vintage) Aramis it feels more like ‘School of Chant’ than the hand of the master himself.
Clearly, this will to appeal to those who like the great leather chypres, but sadly, when compared to Aramis directly, the shortcomings are all too plain.
