Bewitched and dazzled...
Embrujo de Sevilla does not need a review. It needs a poem that only a compatriot of hers, with his heart ablaze of passion, could write. It needs an ode to praise her eternal beauty, or an elegy to lament that this beauty is forever gone. Something like the immortal words of Federico García Lorca, that sound as if they were written for this beauteous Hispalense...

"Then I realized I had been murdered.
They looked for me in cafes, cemeteries and churches
... but they did not find me.
They never found me?
No. They never found me."

Shortly afterwards our "handshake" which left me breathless, and after finally managing to put myself together, I got angry. I kept looking at the Lilliputian sample and asking: "Why did you do this to me? I was happy without you! I was happy in my ignorance! Now I'm obsessed! Now I have to have you at all costs! Now I must have a Spanish mistress, to send her search all over Spain for you! And if I'm not good enough for Spanish ladies, then I myself must move to Spain and dedicate the rest of my life gathering as many bottles of you as I can find!" But the little vial gave no response. It just sat there, showing the slight indifference that someone who is fed up with compliments usually shows.
But levity aside, what on earth is this? How could something so beautiful elude me for so many years? This devastating Spanish charm is one of the very best perfumes I have ever smelled. It succeeds so greatly in making it possible to enclose time, in this case the past, in a bottle, that it bends reason. It's so dreamy and so nostalgic, that for a while I was not sure if I would be able to even start writing a review about it. I doubted I could find the proper words to speak of how it speaks to me. But then she appeared...It was like a beautiful yet melancholic apparition of an once breathtakingly beautiful Spanish enchantress who slowly materialised in front of me, and started to tell me stories. Stories about how there was a time when men were drawing knives for her dark eyes, in the cobblestone alleys of Seville. Stories of how young artists, desperately and secretly in love with her, were singing passionate cantes jondos in Peñas Flamencas, about the way her raven hair shone under the bright Andalusian sun. Stories about how the flutter of her dress made men in taverns order one more glass of sherry, every time she passed in front of them during her Sunday strolls in Plaza de España.
This is elegance. This is passion. This is art. This is Perfume! If someone had to have a perfume as a reminder of what perfume truly is, Embrujo de Sevilla would be the only one needed. And if someone asked me "What is perfume?", this is what I'd give her/him to smell. It seems that the spell this sorceress has woven around me is slowly making me losing my mind...
The most difficult adversary to beat is not the one who attacks either your body or your mind. The most difficult adversary to beat is the one who attacks your heart. And this particular one had my heart shackled and on its knees within seconds.
I never thought that there would ever be a perfume which would seriously doubt the first by far place that Opium holds in my heart all these years. I thought that it was already too late for such a thing to happen. But this bewitching Doña of yore is making eyes at me from the very first moment I met her. And these eyes do not forgive. These eyes are the ones to be lost in and never be found again. Ever. Y madre de Dios, ellos son tan muy hermosos...

off the beaten track: the other magic of Seville
No rhythmic clattering of castanets, just the distant clattering of horses' hooves, without which there seems to be no place in Seville's old town.
But a wonderful walk through the city's large market hall. The art deco building alone is well worth seeing, but the inside ...
This fragrance composition gathers its inspiration for the fruity opening under the light and airy steel structure.
Everything is gathered on a stall: red strawberries, my beloved ripe, velvety-skinned summer peaches and, of course, citrus fruits - freshly harvested and full of aroma straight from the tree or the field.
What a delight for a city-stricken nose and, above all, for the eyes: what a generous display of colors and shapes! This also applies to the area with thousands of flowers that I am drawn to afterwards: Nothing exotic, nothing foreign - just all the beauties we know and have come to love so much in the various fragrance compositions.
The bunches of garden carnations alone: very slender dancers with their pink lace skirts and their spicy, strong aromas.
Garden and scented roses, loosely tied in jasmine green and so close together with this now even fresher, sometimes quite numbing aroma of the many white flower stars towards evening.
This also applies to the lily of the valley, which looks so innocent, but ... "When evening comes and when it gets dark" ...
I can hardly wait to sink into these waves of fragrance that play with the senses.
I just love them!
I have to deal with the proud iris differently: If it uses its powder puff too vigorously, the sneezing starts - but it's still beautiful!
Ylang ylang wraps itself around all this fragrance - forming a bright, friendly embrace and bringing us a little closer to the "Magic of Seville".
"Embrujo de Sevilla", brought from the slumber of the past by dear Theresa, is already a summery treat for the nose that also delights the eyes.
But as early as 1933 - what an old age for such a vibrant fragrance beauty! - people knew about the magic of the base on which everything is founded and so it turns out accordingly here too:
Golden resins and creamy sandalwood with a slightly masculine touch, not to mention vetiver, while tonka bean and languid white vanilla add a certain erotic flair.
Just very light: a quick glance, a smile, a light touch ...

"Embrujo de Sevilla" - the magic of Seville works on me too.
Not just yellow-green, as the color of the fragrant liquid would suggest:
Pleasant ripeness and also a little abundance in fruits and flowers, in smoky resins and the playful eroticism of vanilla come together here and form a combination full of fragrance, sunshine and southern joie de vivre.
This so tasteful companion on my skin leads me through fragrance, form and color for a few hours and leaves me with a feeling of joy and well-being after it has quietly said goodbye with appropriate courtesy after a not too long time.
What remains is the memory of such an enchanted city and a smile.
And the knowledge: Many more of these magical walks and experiences await in the little tube.
Dear Theresa: Thank you again from the bottom of my heart!

Does that seem Spanish to you?
I am also an admirer of the art of fragrances from bygone eras, as I'm sure you know. That's why I'm always on the lookout for "new old things". And that's how this gem of a fragrance found its way into my home - well, rather, I bought it because I'm stubbornly waiting for the promised summer (which had already appeared some time ago).

The fragrance starts off very aldehyde-heavy, which doesn't bother me in and of itself and doesn't here because it simultaneously turns into a green, delicately floral, slightly bitter something that I associate with neroli. It also has a tiny amount of citrus in it, which immediately combines with the garden carnation that I love so much. A cheerful, radiant moment of well-being envelops me, truly a delight.

The heart notes have probably evaporated a little, although I can still detect some small flowers discreetly, I can't say exactly what they are, could be something from the lily of the valley, but then it's a very tart green, because sweetness is completely absent here.

The woody base note makes it all the more attractive to me, as I am also fond of woody fragrances, there is also a bit of a resinous bill, so I am inclined to describe this fragrance as unisex, but that is only by the way.

Here we have another golden-spicy Herbblumer, which unfortunately doesn't last long on me, I had to spray it several times (but I'm used to that anyway, so I don't mind). This is certainly due to its age, as the fragrance - I read and marvel - has been around since 1933.

I don't think the lady who sold me this fragrance knew what a treasure she was giving me here (the original packaging is still there, so this bottle is probably quite old too), because it is very expensive online.
In any case, I'm happy to own it now and am once again enjoying "old things"

Quiet Chanel No.5 with bonus

Vintage fragrances are now a particular passion of mine. I got Embrujo de Sevilla from Demeter. The fragrance was released in 1933, but I can't say how long it was produced. The label and the coating on the lid of my bottle are already peeling off, so it must have been around for a few (decades). However, the fragrance itself must be in excellent condition. The citrusy notes have faded, but I can still clearly detect peach. Not a juicy, fresh one, though, but a dried one. That's something new for me. I can't think of any other perfume with this note. What follows is a dimmed Chanel No.5. If you compare the fragrance pyramids, it's not particularly surprising. I'm satisfied so far, because Chanel No.5 is one of my favorite fragrances.
Surprisingly, however, I first notice something slightly animalic in Basus. And then it becomes spicy rather than woody. But soft, pleasant and always with a hint of Chanel No.5.
Lasting power is rather weak at only a few hours and there is no sillage at all. I can't say whether this is due to the age of the fragrance or whether it's just an EDC. I can't find any information about the fragrance concentration on the bottle. It's just a shame because it just smells great. Imagine that your absolute favorite song is playing somewhere in the background. that you can hear it, but much too quietly. That's a bit frustrating
