Truly lovely but the bottle is a notoriously leaky liability
Made to honor the love shared by King Nebuchadnezzar II and his queen, Amatys, this is one of the most luxurious perfume oils on the market. Think violet pastilles scattered onto the surface of a pool of honey-almond cream, as inviting as a warm bath on a cold night. It is gently gourmand, but not sugary. Everything has been buffed to a creamy roundness and pitched at the volume of bare feet padding across a deeply-carpeted lodge in the French Alps.

Although luxury for luxury sake often makes for a dull experience, Amatys never bores. For one, an anisic note like licorice or coriander flickers breaks up the white noise of the nutty ‘melted Toblerone’ accord. But there’s also a caramelized note that adds a touch of smokiness or burnt sugar to the bland creaminess of the cream, and a bit of (polite) patchouli that dusts the surface of the almond crème brulée with bittersweet cocoa.

Amatys is interesting because though its smoothness is allowed to amble on uninterrupted, there is a wealth of detail lurking beneath the surface. Rich, accomplished, and heartbreakingly lovely, this is a perfume for someone who values the unshowy beauty of things made with true craftsmanship. Careful with getting the bottle shipped - it may arrive intact, and it may arrive empty.

Historic Gourmand
Anytis of the Kingdom of Media married Nebuchadnezzar II of Babylon and missed her green homeland so much that he built the Hanging Gardens of Babylon for her, or so the story goes. It inspired Nabucco's now very had to find and expensive fragrance. Intrigued, I hunted it down. The prominent vanilla, honey, almond and praline notes make it a true gourmand (studies show men are attracted to the smell of baking, candy and fruit). I don't usually love gourmands (they remind me of slaving over a stove), but this fine fragrance is an exception, principally because of the indolic Jasmine, the sultry amber, patchouli and musk -- women loving the latter more than men, we are told. If I were single, I'd wear this on dates or to gatherings where my kind of guy might catch a stray whiff and want to meet me (not realizing I'm reminding him of pastry). Kidding aside, this is a wonderful, warm and sophisticated perfume that is well worth the effort to smell or own it.

Bake, bake cake, Grandma has called
After such good reviews, it's hard to resist and get a sample. Said and done, and paid a pretty penny for just two drops of this wonder scent. Okay, never mind, it is an oil with a lot of high-quality ingredients, no question about it, but....

For me, it's mainly a sweet gourmand. Cookies, cookies everywhere, just cookies.

Bake, bake cake, Grandma has called. The table is full of delicacies. Vanilla peaks, almond cookies, honey cookies. Everything the heart desires. The whole kitchen smells delicious. The wooden cupboard in the corner has been adorned with a small vase, but unfortunately, you can only smell very little of the flowers inside, and not much more of the wood either.

And as it goes with snacking, after a few hours, it makes you feel sick. That's definitely how I feel. And for the next few months, I won't be able to smell the delicacies, let alone snack on them.

The scent surely has very high-quality ingredients, but for me, the sweet notes clearly and exclusively dominate for several hours, without mercy. A drop more alcohol wouldn't hurt. I need to add that orally:).

I hope no one will be mad at me, but.... I don't want to smell like a walking pastry shop. And at my age, even less so. Otherwise, the kids will be calling after me.... Bake, bake cake, Grandma has called:)).

Sugar and spice and everything nice
Are you looking for a perfume that captures the scent of the legendary Babylonian gardens? For an unconventional, daring composition, a milestone in the art of perfumery? For a fragrance that embodies pure eroticism? In that case: Keep looking, because "Amytis" is none of that.

What unfolds instead after the first drop on the skin is vanilla. Not unconventional vanilla, not smoky, unsweet, or paired with juniper, but sweet vanilla, soft as a down feather through the powdery lightness of heliotrope, which for my nose represents the only distinctly perceivable floral note. I sense more of a hint of jasmine than I can actually sniff out; instead, bright floral honey and almonds give "Amytis" a slight gourmand note, without the sweetness becoming overwhelming. Not edible, but delicious.

There is little development; after two or three hours, the gourmand impression weakens, and a certain spiciness joins the vanilla heart. The fragrance pyramid indicates coriander, but I would describe it more as allspice. Nevertheless, the scent never develops into a spice bomb; the spices clearly play only a supporting role here, along with a slight woodiness that I would categorize as cedar, bright and clean. There are no sharp edges or corners in "Amytis," no dark abysses, not even a rose with thorns still attached.

The reader may now wonder: Does the world need this? Another vanilla scent in a downright classic rendition? My answer is: Yes, definitely! Because what makes "Amytis" so special to my nose is how rounded and refined this fragrance is. It is not easy to create a vanilla without dark or contrasting elements, without the composition slipping into the banal, sugary, or worst of all, kitschy. But "Amytis" is lovely and pleasing, yet also mature and noble, like an elegant cocktail dress in delicate cream tones.

A note to conclude: The fragrance comes as a perfume oil, and as such, it lacks harsh top notes. In an interview, I read that the scents of Nabucco are said to consist of about 70% fragrance materials, and even though I cannot verify this, I believe it immediately. For an oil, I find the sillage remarkable, making it quite suitable for people who usually find oil and cream perfumes too intimate.

The queen of gourmand perfume oils
It smells enchanting to me of strawberry, finest vanilla, sweet almonds, and 1001 nights with an animalistic touch.
