A refreshing tobacco for a warm, humid summer

Soft, fresh, damp, and a bit gourmand…this is a unique and unexpected composition with complexity. It opens with a fresh, citric fruity note, but the eponymous notes of clementine and pine are not in fact the dominant ones. A soft, wheaten tobacco halfway between wet hay and oats, with a subtle vanillic quality, forms the heart of this fragrance. Meanwhile, a faint passionfruit and citrus provides a juicy freshness, and for me this combination evokes a hot, humid tropical thunderstorm - earthy, wet, but warm and bright and ultimately refreshing. It also reads quite gourmand to me - like slices of fresh orange mixed with oatmeal.
The overall scent profile is, perhaps, very slightly soft-leathery, but I definitely did not think “leather!” or “suede!” when I first smelled this, and it wouldn’t have crossed my mind without seeing the notes.
I haven’t smelled anything like this before, I think it’s unique and I’d recommend it to anyone wanting to try something unusual but likeable, especially for someone wanting a summer fragrance that isn’t your typical freshie.
Disclaimer: I haven't actually tried wearing this in summer yet, but the performance has been so subtle in the cold weather that I think it would benefit from the heat.

edited to add: on consideration, the "tropical" accord in this reminds me of the one in Gelatto

leathery orange

The name is incredibly misleading, neither the pine nor the clementine are the main notes here. Despite that, it’s a lovely scent nonetheless. This opens with very strong leather and suede, with a touch of leathery passion fruit and blood orange. The clementine is only really a background surprisingly. You get fresh and smoky tobacco covered pine needles with an ambery saffron as well. This is sweet, it’s leathery, slightly smoky, and only a hint of fruity citrus in the dry down.

Not What I Expected

Going through the pineward samples, I have come to expect a lot of pine and wood. This did not give me tree inspired. This scent started off sugary sweet like pink bubble gum. The middle notes were the floral, the jasmine really stood out to me. It was a nice follow up to the very sweet beginning. The dry down was a light floral leather. The scent lasted about 3 hours and its projection is okay.

Woody citrus with a spicy twist

Sampling Pineward Perfumes Clemenpine, one of a quintet of new spring releases from this Utah-based indie house. It immediately lives up to its portmanteau citrus/woody name, with plenty of spice in it, as well, albeit not an overwhelming amount; the leather, tobacco, suede, and jasmine notes seem to color the fragrance this way, apart from the citrus/pine center after which it takes its name. I think it’s pretty good, and as with more of the recent releases, occupies a new space / has some uniqueness that sets it apart from the dominant dark pine resin vibe (which I love) that characterized about half of the house’s early releases. It’s neat to see releases geared (in my opinion) toward more warm weather wearing the past couple of springs (in the northern hemisphere). There’s a twinge of an “orange spice” vibe that gives Clemenpine a classic familiarity but overall, it smells fairly modern and inventive.

As with most of the house's offerings in EDT concentration, currently, Clemenpine is priced at $135/80 for 57/37ml, sold exclusively through the house website.
