Artificial Coconut-Vanilla Soup from the Test Tube

For over ten days, I eagerly awaited the delivery of my little Discovery Kit of the Nest perfume oils. And 10 minutes before the store closed today on Saturday, I received the message that the package had arrived. After a really tough week at the office with a cold, I was still in bed… but I sprinted out and actually made it.

At the café around the corner, I couldn't wait and unpacked my "treasure." Right away, a cloud of scent wafted towards me. Of course, I had to test "Madagascar Vanilla | Nest" first. Is my search for the perfect vanilla finally over? 8.6 points can't be lying.

I applied it to my wrist. First impression… okeeeyyy… mehhh…. Is this going anywhere? But just 10 minutes later, I am sure: no. On the way home, disappointment is written all over my face.

The scent doesn’t develop, it remains straightforward and stubbornly COCONUT VANILLA from the test tube. My sensitive little head starts to show signs of a headache. Something about it reminds me of the base note of "Erba Pura | XerJoff"… somehow “aggressively soft” and artificial. And of the candle section in the Swedish furniture store. This is exactly how the artificial vanilla of my childhood and youth smelled, which is where my decades-long aversion to vanilla scents originated. A total flop.

Now I sit here feeling a bit naive and foolish for falling for the hype on social media and swear to myself that I won't make any more blind buys.

But maybe, just maybe, I will like the other perfume oils better… or it will work with layering.

Hope dies last, after all. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Vanilla in perfumes has been synthetically made from wood for many years now, but believe me. Otherwise, the many hectoliters of perfume scattered around the world would be responsible for the extinction of vanilla. Check out my last two blogs; they’re on my page and accessible, though it’s been a while. But how is coconut scent made? Often, coconut smells similar to milky fig, which is definitely produced synthetically through modern methods. All fruit scents can only be recreated synthetically. Vanilla itself; just smell a real pod; it’s not sweet, but dark, woody, and a bit smoky-biting. But the art of perfumers lies in skillfully mixing the best recreations into a perfume. What you wrote could also be flavored with tonka; the tonka bean is like vanilla on steroids - for me. Don’t be upset, you tested it, and that’s what sets are for.

Sure, I believe you! I'm also glad that artificial alternatives have been found - though I’d rather not smell them :D I enjoy reading your blogs about it. I think coconut can only be made artificially, just like almost all fruit notes (except citrus fruits)?
The true scent of a vanilla pod is wonderful, as you said, not sweet but smoky, spicy, aromatic. And I really love those kinds of "duplicates" in fragrances too :) And tonka, whether artificial or not (is there still a natural scent?), unfortunately gives me a headache.
This scent - sorry - is just not for me. But as you can see from the review, it has its fans.
Thanks for the encouragement. I really learned something with this order! :D

Oh dear, I wouldn't have dared to open the sample with that fragrance pyramid... 🏆 for the courage!
I have a coconut and vanilla trauma from my childhood/teen years (my older sister would shower, moisturize, AND perfume herself every weekend with either coconut or vanilla - both very overpowering and artificial!). The whole house smelled of it for hours... 😔 (even though she was long gone...)
And ever since I had a great steak on my plate and at that moment a thick, gooey vanilla cloud took over the house, the trauma has been there... 😂

Then definitely keep your hands off it 😂… I thought with the good ratings I could overcome my coconut trauma. But no. Really not… 🙈
