Indian Bazaar
Kali, the Black, the multi-armed goddess of death, destruction, but also of renewal and resurrection from Indian mythology, is the namesake of this fragrance. My imagination runs wild with a scent inspired by such a gruesome goddess (she wears severed arms as a skirt, dead children as earrings, and a necklace of skulls around her neck) :-D I expect a dark, earthy-heavy fragrance, perhaps even a bit musty...
In fact, the scent Kali captures the theme of India in its notes. Superficially speaking, it smells like those Indian shops that sell patchouli and jasmine oil, Indian incense, Indian-themed knickknacks, and those typical garments found in such stores. There is a shop like that in my hometown, and as a teenager, I often bought things there. The atmosphere in that shop fascinated me back then and still does to this day: a bit dark, cluttered, very colorful, and that very typical smell that you can detect from three streets away. Today, I live 600 km away from my hometown, but whenever I am home and have time, a visit to the "Afghan Warehouse" is on the agenda. :-)
The fragrance is dense, heavy, intense, and has a good sillage. I can clearly perceive patchouli from the very first moment: earthy, dark, and with that note familiar from Nag Champa incense sticks. The jasmine is equally distinct: floral, heavy, and sweet - anyone who has had a bottle of jasmine sambac under their nose will recognize it immediately. I wouldn't have identified the orange as such, but Kali definitely has a fruity note and a few tiny citrus elements.
There is hardly any development in the fragrance; Kali is a very linear scent that only softens a bit over time, becoming rounder. But all the notes that are present at the beginning remain constant throughout the wear.
I applied it yesterday afternoon, a tiny drop on my wrist, rubbed between both (I am not a disciple of the theory that you can mechanically rub fragrance molecules ;-)), and one on the nape of my neck... I can still smell it quite distinctly in my clothes now (more than 12 hours later), and while showering about 2 hours ago, I could suddenly perceive it very clearly again.
Kali is, like all Nothing Perfume fragrances, an oil (there is also an alcohol-based body mist available for all scents), and you can choose your bottle from various handcrafted options, each in several colors.
