And the bride wears a myrtle wreath...
The myrtle was dedicated to the goddess Aphrodite in Greek mythology. It is synonymous with virginity and was used as bridal adornment by the Greeks and Romans in ancient times.
In our region, myrtle, which originally comes from the Mediterranean, made its entrance in the 16th century, and the custom of adorning the virgin bride with a myrtle wreath was adopted.
In the Czech Republic, where I come from, the bride was adorned with a myrtle wreath and the groom with a myrtle branch tied with a white ribbon on his lapel. Weddings - at least in the countryside - were an event for the whole village. The female relatives of the bride and groom would bake cakes, called koláče, days before the wedding. These are yeast dough cakes that are rolled flat and topped with quark, poppy seeds, fruit, etc. (similar to a pizza). However, these yeast cakes for the wedding were so small that they could only be cut out with a shot glass. And they were soooo delicious. We children would always go to the wedding house to give our family congratulations. For that, we would always receive a big bag full of these tasty little cakes.
Whether it is still customary today to wear a myrtle wreath and myrtle branch, I do not know, but it would be nice if it still were. The small evergreen leaves of the myrtle and its white flowers, which look like little stars.
I have not encountered myrtle in fragrances very often, so I was curious about how perfume 137 would interpret it. Myrtle is the third bottle in the 'Hollywood Stromboli 1950' set.
In this case, I am very glad that two other fragrances are part of the set and that they can all be layered. Myrtle is a sweet scent that starts off a bit green but quickly takes on a resinous-vanilla, sweet note that remains consistent.
Of all three fragrances in the set, this one is the most long-lasting and would be too warm and too vanilla for me to wear solo in the current temperatures. Therefore, I would layer it with spearmint and/or immortelle in the summer and use it solo in the winter.
In conclusion, I would like to thank Yatagan again for the three samples that inspired me to purchase the "Hollywood Stromboli 1950" set. The idea behind perfume 137 is interesting, as is its execution. The only thing I would criticize is the longevity of the fragrances, which I find a bit too short. Everything else - great!
