love at second smell
I've hardly ever heard of Patti Labelle Girlfriend. But I have enjoyed her music and thought she might have made a pleasantly adult perfume. So when I saw it on eBay for a bargain price, I looked it up online. Finding that it has two of my favorite summer notes, I bought blind.
One of the problems in modern perfume, as many have noted, is that it has to grab the wearer at first smell. It's not like it used to be, when there were few enough perfumes being launched that someone might actually get to know a scent before deciding whether she liked it.
And that's especially a problem for this scent. When I first sprayed it on, it was quite vinegary and not at all what one would want to wear. As it started to dry, it turned into dandelion stems. But 15 minutes in, it became a lovely, soft green floral, cooling and slightly powdery. Both times I've tried it, two sprays have lasted over 6 hours. Nothing at all sweet here. Just the cool, refreshing, pale yellow scent of mimosa. What a nice find!
