Burnt toast
Due to an over-exposure to the pyrazine-like molecules used in indie perfumery to approximate the scent of toast, bread, cake, or crackers, I am wary of any perfume oil that lists a bakery item in its description. Because I have smelled this molecule too much, it now smells (to me) like a badly-drawn cartoon version of a baked good, i.e., messy, fake as hell, and full of jagged little chemical edges waiting to catch at my throat. While I recognize these molecules do a good job of creating the fantasy of bread for most people, what stands out to me personally is its chemical non-realness.
Sadly, this means that a baked goods note is usually a deal breaker for me. However, I understand that where I smell a fake bread note, most other people will smell real bread, so I will try to describe Sarah Good as objectively as I can. Sarah Good opens with the scent of bread overlaid with a cheerful orange note. It possesses a character both steamy and crisp, as if someone is peeling a mandarin in a bakery where a tray of cinnamon rolls has just been removed from the oven. The baked good element smells completely unnatural to me, but the orange compensates somewhat with its bright tartness.
The orange fades away quite dramatically, revealing a drydown rich in the ‘fallen autumn leaves’, amber, and acrid patchouli-leather accords that are the building blocks of Sixteen92 atmospheric-type oils. These accords do tend to smell a little headshoppy, but in a far less sweet, bubblegummy manner way than one normally sees in the indie sector. If you are a man looking tentatively to dip your toes into the indie oil sector, Sixteen92 would be an excellent house to start with.
