Aftershavey dirt
At first, Baba Yaga is a confusing mish-mash of aftershave, dirt, and bubblegum. But when the dust settles, it becomes clear that Baba Yaga is actually a relative of Sixteen92’s own Salem, simply switching out the smoky church incense for a sweet headshop musk to buffer the central accord of autumn leaves. This switcheroo shifts the scene from Salem’s old stone church to a cozy New Age shop, where its owner has decided to light a cone or two and throw some dried sage onto the burner.

The bitter-spicy ‘aftershave’ taste left by the dirt and the herbs is effectively countered by the lurid Juicy Fruit red musk emanating from the dragon’s blood. This is pure eau de New Age shop, but with a slightly unexpected, and therefore sexy, masculine edge. The drydown is intensely powdery, so heads up if that is not your thing.

A spooky kind of comfort
Known for their atmospheric scents, Baba Yaga became my first love from Sixteen92. The scenario painted is a lone witch in her cabin, with drying herbs hanging above a gentle fire. The dragon's blood, while the most prominent note, is complimented by the dirt note into balance the incense. After about a half an hour of wear, the wood smoke peaks out along with the dried herbs (I personally smell sage). It becomes a very cozy smell (for a witch ;) ).

The throw is stronger than some of Sixteen92's other earth based perfumes, but since this is a perfume oil and not an EdP it never becomes overpowering/offensive. My skin tends to eat up scents without a fixative so the throw would be more prominent on someone without this issue. It lasts for about 6 hours with a gradual fade throughout if I were to not wear a fixative. If you are a lover of atmospheric/nature/woody scents, this is certainly worth exploring.

Of Herb-Legged Smoke Huts and Red Dragon's Blood Trees
Like warm wax, indistinct images of a hut on stick legs of dried herbs flow through the fog of told Slavic forests. It seems to be smoking spices inside over mild wood smoke and threads of pepper, but you can only sense it in the haze through windows made of brownish honeycombs. In the reddish sparkle of resinous eyes of softly leaning dragon's blood trees, the house creeps over earthy floors that gather dust in the dull light with the swirls. The diffuse glow of changing enchantment draws them like a resin-spicy veil through the past forests.
**
Sixteen92, based in Fort Worth, Texas, has been producing fragrances in small batches since 2014. Claire Baxter draws inspiration from history, literature, tradition, and magic. Her creations are available as oils, perfumes, and/or extraits.
"Ved'ma/Baba Yaga" thematizes the eponymous figure from Slavic folklore and fairy tales, who can be both a young forest woman and an old woman stylized as a witch in the tales, unable to leave her house because her magical power is tied to the place. The hut is often depicted with chicken legs. The various portrayals of the figure range from the ruler of death and rebirth to the evil, man-eating old witch to the wise healer.
The scent begins spicy-waxy, with the red-resinous dragon's blood initially appearing slightly balsamic, reminiscent of beeswax in combination with candle wax, and quickly mingles with spicy herbs that carry slightly wood-smoky as well as peppery warm and sharp notes. Soon, the smoke becomes more balsamic, likely again due to the resins, before sour earthy aromas join in, which become duller and dustier after a few hours, yet retain their bright resinous-green-spicy character in the base. The encounter with Baba Yaga is rather modest in projection and lasts only a good six to seven hours.
