Fine Fig and Fir...
Caligna opens with a very aromatic combination of orange leaf, aromatic herbs and fig. Transitioning to the early heart the orange leaf recedes though still remains detectable as the fig takes over as star, revealing a bit of its fruity nature to balance the residual aromatics with now slightly detectable wood rising from the base. As the middle progression continues the fragrance develops a subtle powdery sheen derived from violet as the remaining orange leaf finally disappears, while coniferous fir briefly laced with a mint leaf-like tinge joins in. During the late dry-down the aromatics completely disappear as the now slightly sweetened oakwood from the base becomes the star with the fragrance becoming a skin scent. Projection is above average early but tamping down considerably late, and longevity is on the low side of average at 6-8 hours on skin.

Caligna is a much more complex fragrance than one might think on first glance. It starts off extremely fresh and aromatic with the orange leaf, herbs and fig going all out. Then, just as one thinks they have the fragrance figured out it brings in nuances of powdery violet, green fir, and I could have sworn I even detected just a bit of mint-leaf or a close approximation for a brief moment in the heart as well. Then again it takes another turn late as it becomes a sweet woody fragrance. The whole thing is quite remarkably done by the relatively unknown perfumer Baghriche-Arnaud, with the transitions quite seamless. If I had any minor gripe about the composition it would have to be its performance metrics which while not bad by any measure still could be much better. The bottom line is while Caligna is one of the most expensive offerings from the house of L'Artisan at $180 per 100ml bottle; it also is one of the best earning a "very good" to "excellent" rating of 3.5 to 4 stars out of 5. Recommended for sure.

Exquisite and Poor Mix
I don't know what to think about Caligna, because on me it smells exquisite and poor at the same time. The poor part is what makes me think of a overused violet accord which is a standard in masculines fragrance. Maybe i notice more evident because i hate this aroma so much that even few amounts made me feel uncomfortable. It's a noise that i would remove to appreciate best the aromatic aura of this fragrance, which is the exquisite part to me, a good combination of something like green flowers, fruits, and something leafy and with a cool aspect too. Something on it makes me think of Absolue Pour Le Matin, which i love, like a more aromatic version of Pour Le Matin. If i could remove the violet this one would be perfect to me.

The aromatic green fig perfume I didn't know I needed
Caligna was a total surprise and a total hit for me. I gave an Etiket's sale associate the challenge of finding a perfume for my boyfriend as he's pretty picky in the hopes that he'd grab a full bottle from the store when we went there this weekend. When she picked this one, I had never seen it before even though I have tried a few L'Artisan Parfumeur offerings. My boyfriend smelled it on the strip of paper and immediately gave it to me, saying it was one of mine. He was totally right. Kept sniffing the strip while my boyfriend sampled a few perfumes and I knew I had to go back home with a full bottle. The SA even told me it was their last bottle in-store and there was no other bottle in the warehouse. It was destiny.

I've unfortunately learned since then (from people's comment) that L'Artisan parfumeur has discontinued this fragrance. Fortunately, my 100ml bottle should last me awhile. Caligna is the aromatic, green, fruity fig perfume I never knew I needed. At the top, there's this delicate, subtle fruity fig. I've been associating figs with tea as the first time I've smelled this fruit in a perfume, it was with Indigo. I could smell a fresh, fruity iced tea. There's a calming, soothing clary sage note that brings in an almost metallic accord, but the freshness is further enhanced with it. Something kept beckoning me to smell my skin. A tinge of green rounds everything up. As the perfume moves on, the sage remains, effervescent and a delight to the senses. The note of pine needles from the bottom notes also comes out. It's fresh, woody (not too much), herbal, green and slightly spiced. The perfume remains light and airy even as the florals start to appear. They're gentle, swaying in the breeze, surronded by a bed of pine needles. Near the end, there's a lovely, calming warmth that emanates from the skin, like a soft velvety blanket surrounding you. It becomes quite clean-like scent. The perfume finally dies down quietly and silently, following a clear path. Never got any synthetic notes from it.

The only downside to this gentle one is the longevity. I could no longer smell anything on my skin after 4 hours which is a shame. The perfume is well-balanced and masterfully crafted. I felt at ease, calm and collected when I wore it. I'm sad I got a discontinued fragrance, but I'll be cherishing the full bottle I've gotten until its last drop.

Mediterraneo
Caligna is the smell of a hot August afternoon in a mediterranean countryside.

The insects fly around and the burning sun heats up the trees, everything slows down like a typical summer afternoon, the lazyness, the figs on the wood table in the kitchen of the summer house, the mosquitos flying around them, your nap on a deckchair under the pine tree.

Caligna, why are you so beautiful?

Second Figuier
L'Artisan's Second Figuier which is sharp to the point of spiky.
A very different fig which shows how the times had changed since the first one; how the maison had moved away from niche experiments and closer to the mainstream.
Caligna means 'flirt' in Provençal, something Tommy Girl might have said had she lived among fig trees and not shopping malls.

Initially green and almost metallic (clary sage), is getting warmer and woodier without completely losing the green note. Great!!

Figs lay on a bed of pine needles and clary sage. Hits the spot for that aromatic, green, fresh, unisex fragrance fit for any moment.

Fig lets mandarin take the lead.
Woods have a violet touch.
It gets green, but not better.
Luckily, it fades quickly.

A bright green scent with still unopened flower buds and a hint of conifer. I imagine fig with it. Unfortunately, it's very fleeting.

Woody-musty fig. The combination of green unripe fig and violet is anything but rewarding.

A fine weave of green leaves, exuberantly curling flowers, and small figs in grass gradually transforms into crinkling hay.

My compliment catcher. Woody with a subtle hint of flower, which I can't identify as jasmine, traces of sweet resin. Fig, not at all.
