The Sweet Flowers of the Nineties

I was in the tenth or eleventh grade when K. joined our class. She was originally from the new federal states and spoke her mind freely. Her clothing was nothing special and certainly not expensive, and she was generally not considered beautiful. But she didn’t care. She did her own thing. Dyed her hair purple and always had a smile for everyone. I enjoyed connecting with her. The supposedly cool girls didn’t want anything to do with her, of course. But I liked her lively, completely untypical demeanor for someone from Baden-Württemberg, her numerous stories from the time before the reunification, and her immense self-confidence. Because K. didn’t care whether others accepted her or not. She didn’t want to please. “I don’t care about any of that,” she would always say. (A look at Serenissima's wonderful comment also explains well why. She not only describes the scent enchantingly but also clarifies the meaning of the name).

K. always smelled of Impulse Mille Fleurs. I’m sure this Impulse scent should be well known to some perfume lovers here who are around my age. After gym class, she would spritz it all over herself. You could always catch a whiff of her from afar when she was nearby.

Now, I don’t want to claim that Sylvaine Delacourte's Vanori smells exactly like this Impulse deodorant from the nineties. But there are parallels. And I’m sure that nearly every girl who loved this deodorant in her youth will also appreciate the very finely composed and somewhat more mature sister, Vanori. Here we have an elegant floral scent with a youthful flair, delicately underlined by vanilla notes. One should have a certain fondness for jasmine and especially frangipani. Vanori is not a wallflower. These flowers shout “here I am” and want to be noticed. Hiding is not an option with this fragrance. But it is a wonderful flatterer, despite all its opulence, thanks to the delicate vanilla. I like such scents, even if I don’t see them as my own. For me, the floral notes need to take a bit more of a backseat. However, my school friend K. had different preferences.

K. would have surely liked Vanori very much. After we lost touch after school, we met again years later. But our interests were so different by then that, unfortunately, there was no further meeting.

A heartfelt thank you to SchatzSucher, who could surely guess that this modern perfume with its wonderful nineties aura sets my thoughts spinning and sends me on a journey once again. I know that. You know me so well by now *wink*

Wonderfully told. Overcoming the pressure to fit in with the cool crowd makes K incredibly likable. I definitely would have sought her company. With my growing preference for scents from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, this one would surely be worth a try, as long as the vanilla doesn't dominate. I haven't encountered the brand yet because I'm afraid the fragrances might be too sweet for me.

I just ordered a sample and yes, you're right. I'm also someone who loved wearing impulses in those age groups. Even in Ba-Wü. Thanks for this thought-provoking comment! ☺️

Beautiful trip down memory lane... I had completely forgotten about the Impulse deodorants. I quite like the Vanori and had the chance to test it some time ago.

I love your stories!! The scent probably isn't for me, but it reminds me of how much the accommodations during our ski courses smelled like a certain deodorant!!

I'm not sure if the scent really smells like that Impulse deodorant. There were so many of those in the 80s, and every girl wore them back then. However, I remember really liking the Vanori, as well as the entire vanilla collection from the brand. 90s trophy!.. ;)

I always love reading your nostalgic stories; they bring long-forgotten events back to life for me as well. Girls like K. have always been likable to me, and the language or dialect is hardly a barrier. As a Carinthian in the Palatinate, I never felt it in school. It's nice that you met K. again, even though your life paths went in different directions. Her scent certainly stayed with you.

The trip into life worlds that are far enough away to seem completely different, yet close enough to still find points of connection for the imagination, brought me joy.

Yes, this scent has a bold character. I like that, and the bottle is stunning. (not just in a figurative sense :=)

Ooooh yes, I also love the 80s and 90s. :-) Nice comment. And 90s trophy. :-) I also think that today’s music is just a repeat of the beautiful 80s and 90s. :-)

I didn't think it was bad, but I can't say if it smells like impulse. You'll notice it when a stranger suddenly gives you flowers. :DD

Sounds like an interesting scent.
Such a nice memory, I always preferred those girls over the so-called It-Girls, who never really were...
I can't remember my deodorants from back then.

Nice reminder of a very confident classmate. I used to switch deodorants every week back then and don't remember anything about it. The scent sounds absolutely lovely, I'll keep it in mind.

Who doesn't know this Impulse deodorant scent? ;-) Funny enough, I've never owned it, even though I liked it on others. Not that I don't use deodorant, but I prefer to keep mine neutral, always have... I don't want them to alter the fragrance I'm wearing that day. Nostalgia trophy to you...

Your first contact with the color purple? I also had the "Impulse Mille Fleurs." Back then, these "Impulse" perfumes were all the rage and found in every little cabinet, locker, or bag. It's nice to revisit that... Nostalgia trophy!

Seems like it's not easy to find. But I don't think it's really my type anyway. I did enjoy reading **Die bitterböse Schulstraße**, though.

Let's just say I had a certain idea ;-) And let's say that true beauty isn't based on appearance. It's found in the heart, and no perfect exterior can disguise that. And this comment is once again written with heart.
