The Sweet Flowers of the Nineties

I was in the tenth or eleventh grade when K. joined our class. She was originally from the new federal states and spoke her mind freely. Her clothing was nothing special and certainly not expensive, and she was generally not considered beautiful. But she didn’t care. She did her own thing. Dyed her hair purple and always had a smile for everyone. I enjoyed connecting with her. The supposedly cool girls didn’t want anything to do with her, of course. But I liked her lively, completely untypical demeanor for someone from Baden-Württemberg, her numerous stories from the time before the reunification, and her immense self-confidence. Because K. didn’t care whether others accepted her or not. She didn’t want to please. “I don’t care about any of that,” she would always say. (A look at Serenissima's wonderful comment also explains well why. She not only describes the scent enchantingly but also clarifies the meaning of the name).

K. always smelled of Impulse Mille Fleurs. I’m sure this Impulse scent should be well known to some perfume lovers here who are around my age. After gym class, she would spritz it all over herself. You could always catch a whiff of her from afar when she was nearby.

Now, I don’t want to claim that Sylvaine Delacourte's Vanori smells exactly like this Impulse deodorant from the nineties. But there are parallels. And I’m sure that nearly every girl who loved this deodorant in her youth will also appreciate the very finely composed and somewhat more mature sister, Vanori. Here we have an elegant floral scent with a youthful flair, delicately underlined by vanilla notes. One should have a certain fondness for jasmine and especially frangipani. Vanori is not a wallflower. These flowers shout “here I am” and want to be noticed. Hiding is not an option with this fragrance. But it is a wonderful flatterer, despite all its opulence, thanks to the delicate vanilla. I like such scents, even if I don’t see them as my own. For me, the floral notes need to take a bit more of a backseat. However, my school friend K. had different preferences.

K. would have surely liked Vanori very much. After we lost touch after school, we met again years later. But our interests were so different by then that, unfortunately, there was no further meeting.

A heartfelt thank you to SchatzSucher, who could surely guess that this modern perfume with its wonderful nineties aura sets my thoughts spinning and sends me on a journey once again. I know that. You know me so well by now *wink*

When Elves Help Bees
then something dreamy like this is created.

Grapefruit brings the delicate freshness of morning light.
The elves guide the bees to the most tender and beautiful frangipani and jasmine blossoms,
whose nectar they collect in perfectly coordinated amounts
and accompany them back to their hives, which gently scent the background.

Right next door, the elves have their home.
The little houses are built from creamy-scented sandalwood,
benzoin resin drips balsamically from the small shutters.
The little elf children tease each other with tiny peppercorns.

Consistently, the vanilla pods hanging to dry send their scent over.
They harvested them fresh this morning. They also found a few delicately melting tonka beans, not many yet.

Everything happens in harmony with nature,
(Styrax makes the scent incredibly soft here)
everything is perfectly coordinated,
in absolute harmony.
Every note can be smelled, so fresh,
but nothing stands out,
nothing disturbs the peace of this fantasy realm.

No one should expect a strong sillage here,
but rather a present skin scent,
that wafts around you like an elf, with good longevity.

An absolutely delicate fragrance work from another world,
from another time.

Perhaps the most beautiful vanilla scent I have ever smelled.

an island of scents - an exit strategy?
I can't simply overlook the fifth fragrance from Sylvaine Delacourte's vanilla collection; it too possesses a considerable amount of charm.
Therefore, I hope to do it justice here, even if I may bore some of my readers in the process.
But fairness demands that "Vanori" not simply vanish into nothingness.

"Vanori" transports you to its own fragrant island that appeals to all the senses.
The bitter aroma of grapefruit is refined with pink pepper. The already familiar, light vanilla struggles for a moment to assert itself against this duo.
Thus, it seeks support right from the start from the robust styrax resin. This brings warmth and a slight illusion of vanilla scent.
Together, they successfully play against this opening duo of considerable strength.
In my olfactory perception, the match is now balanced and ready to welcome the splendid blooms of jasmine and frangipani in a loving embrace.
The immense fragrance beauty of jasmine harmonizes extremely well with the enchanting scent of frangipani, which is not entirely uncontroversial.
Frangipani also carries the name "West Indian Jasmine"; perhaps that’s why they form such a unique fragrance duo. Unfortunately, they are a tiny bit "stinky" here as well - but only a little!

This sweet-scented mixture is now enriched with a good dose of syrupy honey: if it weren't for the benzoin with its resinous, slightly scratchy spiciness, it would be too much of this almost intoxicating sweetness for me!
But this resin, and especially sandalwood with its typical, always slightly sensual scent power, provide a balancing base.
Thus, "Vanori" becomes one of those fragrances that offer a timeout in its own unique way.

According to research, "Vanori" is a girl's name meaning "God is my Strength".
This fragrance certainly imparts a certain strength: it transports you to an island far removed from all the stress of everyday life.
"Vanori's" advantage seems to be that everyone can create their own island: new every day, and adapted to the necessity of each day. (A lovely thought!)
I experienced "Vanori" as a kind of guardian spirit/angel.
That’s why this fragrance is a helpful and welcome companion for me, especially now at the beginning of the somewhat gloomier season.

The delicate fragrance, which does not last for hours in its tenderness, is worth noting.
Women with a preference for feminine scents who wish to subtly yet positively emphasize their femininity will surely find a suitable partner in "Vanori".

For me, this fragrance is unfortunately the weakest of the five vanilla collection.
But that doesn’t mean that all fairies and good spirits have left it - it still has that ethereal quality!

Up, up, and away! To sunny fields! To enjoy a light and fluffy grapefruit cake!
Okay, I admit it. The first part of my title comes from the Superman comics, where the phrase was actually incorporated by a music-loving employee of the Superman comics many, many years ago, as the original title "Up, up and away" is actually a song by the US pop group "The 5th Dimension."
Well, since DonJuanDeCat is known to be into comics, he obviously knew that this phrase appears in Superman, yes yes, nerds :D

But alright, let's get to something that is cooler for you! :D
Warmer weather! I bet you all (or at least most of you) long for summer again. Long forgotten is the heatwave that caused, for example, that there was hardly any water left in the sewers and everywhere smelled horrifically of... something I’d rather not describe in detail. Long forgotten are the sleepless nights because one couldn’t sleep due to the muggy heat. Long forgotten are the sticky situations because one sweated like crazy with every little movement. And you want all that back? Of course! Who would ask so foolishly like I do…! :D

Okay okay, summer is,... or can be nice. If it’s not overdone. But I just need this wonderful rhythm with the seasons. A place where it’s always summer (or winter) wouldn’t be for me. Well, maybe I say that because I currently like summer a little less than other people, and because this summer hasn’t been that great for me, but it really doesn’t have to be 30 degrees every day of the year for me! That’s too... well, just too hot! :D
But for everyone who wants to escape the cool seasons, there’s a fragrance like Vanori here. Because Vanori is supposed to radiate sunshine and take you to beautiful, exotic, and warm places! For example, Southeast Asia. Like Thailand, Vietnam, Bali... and such countries, by the way, all highly recommended, one should see one of these countries at least once, even if the flight there is somewhat horrific at around 15-17 hours (and longer...) :D
But now to the scent!

The Scent:
The scent starts with pink pepper and a bit of vanilla, which together with the grapefruit creates an excellent fragrance. The sweet notes, especially with the powdery note of the vanilla, ensure that the grapefruit here smells fresh like a citrus fruit, but not sparkling-citrusy, making the whole thing resemble more of a pastry. About like one of those light-fruity fruit tarts or cakes. Like mandarin or orange cakes, just with delicious (and by the way not bitter) grapefruit. Yes, that's right, once you have the image of such a cake in your mind, the mouth just won’t stop watering :DD
Benzoin makes it even softer and gentler, so that the scent feels particularly cuddly and delicate, especially when the fragrance later reminds less of cakes and smells more like a gentle-sweet-powdery scent.
A bit later, a large part of the sweetness comes from honey, but this scent note should not be imagined as heavy and sticky, but simply as a pleasantly sweet scent that sits nicely in the nose :D
Even later, from the base, I still smell sweet notes, which come from a mix of amber and honey, but also from jasmine and a bit of vanilla. Due to the vanilla, the scent remains powdery and gentle, which is further enhanced by the benzoin and other, not further identifiable resins. Overall, a very nice scent, even if it doesn’t offer much new. Well, at most that you can smell the honey (in the middle part) well without this scent note appearing particularly spicy or sticky-pungent, but simply nice. The very late base, however, smells again only of vanilla.

The Sillage and Longevity:
The sillage is okay, not particularly strong, but also not weak, and thus in a good, average range, where it is well noticeable without leaving too large a scent cloud, as long as you don’t spray yourself from head to toe.
The longevity with most scent notes is about three to four hours. After that, the scent actually smells almost only of vanilla, but this lasts for endless hours :D So the longevity is loooong!

The Bottle:
The bottle is clear and has a round, bulbous shape. On the front, there is a black-and-white label with a drawing of vanilla flowers (I assume… :D), which looks quite nice. I love such labels compared to those boring minimalist labels where just the name is simply written. The cap looks gilded and is cylindrical. A nice bottle, neither exceptionally pretty nor ugly.

So... according to the description of the scent, I should feel transported to warm regions. And yes, that’s somewhat true. Of course, the scent is not one of those citrusy and sparkling fragrances that give a feeling of refreshment, but it is warmer. However, despite this feeling of exotic places, it doesn’t mean that the scent is a pure summer fragrance. It belongs to the scents that are sweet, but not overwhelmingly sweet, so they are probably also well wearable on warm (but not too hot) days, but I find autumn to be the most suitable time for such a scent.

As I said, it’s suitable for daytime, but also for evenings and going out. I loved that it reminded me of delicious cakes at first and only later smelled more like a perfume. This way, you can first drool a bit when your mouth waters and then still smell good :D

And even though the scent is supposed to be unisex, for me it’s actually a women’s fragrance, due to its sweet, powdery, and gentle notes, which all smell quite feminine, like the delicate skin of a woman… or a cat :DD
It’s worth a try, it might please you ladies just as much as it does me.

So then, I wish everyone a nice evening :)

Summer Meadow
I spray "Vanori" on and immediately have the association of a summer meadow. Many fragrant flowers, some of them intense and sweet. There are also dried stems, a hint of hay with still a little green in it. Then it occurs to me: "Vanori" reminds me of "Summer Hill" by Crabtree & Evelyn. However, I make no guarantees; it's been a long time since I had "Summer Hill." Still, this scent comes to mind almost immediately. Later, my summer meadow gets a slightly lemony note and very delicate powder. "Vanori" doesn’t have a great development on me. And the vanilla is so faint in my nose that it could be I only smell it because it must be somewhere here.

Conclusion: Not really a vanilla scent, and thus the theme is missed. I find "Vanori" quite nice, but I don’t have to have it. It just occurs to me again: I had given away "Summer Hill" pretty quickly because I liked it, but I was constantly surrounded by bees wanting to know where I had hidden the delicious flowers.

Addendum: On my T-shirt, I perceive a delicate peppery vanilla.

09/21:
In the meantime, I perceive the vanilla well from the start.

It swings quite charmingly between citrusy-fruity, peppery-spicy, and woody-vanilla-sweet. Aromachemistry gives a nod: but it doesn't hurt.

Beautiful scent, not a monotonous vanilla - the pepper adds the spice. I don't notice any honey, which I don't mind.

The theme "Solar Vanilla" is well captured. Sun, summer, beach. However, I imagine more the noble Sylt instead of the Mediterranean and palm trees.

Slightly bitter start with peppery vanilla, then jasmine in a feather-light way, dipped in honey and enveloped in frangipani. I really like it.

Daring vanilla. Wonderfully peppery. Bitter grapefruit freshness. Mineral-resinous. Frangipani sweet-warm as a counterbalance. I like it.
