An Olfactorily Overcast Night
Oud; a very controversially rated ingredient and above all very multifaceted. Even I, as a non-expert in this field, can recognize differences when it comes to cheap fragrances from Arab countries compared to Alexandria Orientale or Boss Bottled Oud compared to Colonia Oud, and so on. Of course, not everywhere where Oud is written does real Oud exist, but it is still a diverse ingredient that has a certain heaviness, a certain substance underlying it. In this respect, an Oud Cologne surprised me. At first glance, it was indeed the least exciting scent from The Motley for me. How wrong I was.
Interestingly, I only spoke today with what I consider the absolute Oud expert PallasCC, who is actually able to determine from the scent exactly where the Oud comes from. I knew that there is Cambodian and Thai Oud, etc., but I don't know how they smell. She, however, can tell. What exactly we have here in terms of Oud or whether it is even real, my nose cannot determine. In any case, it seems to be another brown Cologne.
At first, I perceive one thing: marjoram. A subtle note runs through to the end; it is more of the associations that the combination of Oud and myrrh evokes. The spicy-warm element meets the Oud, which for me is spicy-bitter to earthy. These first impressions are relativized in that this surplus of spiciness increasingly gives way to the dry-earthy Oud.
In general, it is difficult to filter out individual notes. Only the pepper can at least be credited with bringing new finesse and spirit to the fragrance. Leather is said to be included, and I claim that this can really only be seen as within the realm of possibility if you know leather in such Colognes. This raises the question of whether that is not too much of a good thing when I look at the list of ingredients.
Undoubtedly, a very beautiful, linear fragrance. Oud is not really my territory, but this one is very nebulously perceivable, to speak metaphorically. Over it lies this spice that I perceive as marjoram or even a Maggi mix. I like such mixtures, so it is a wonderful brown Cologne. Unfortunately, it also has miserable longevity and sillage, which is why a purchase is out of the question. I conclude here, as the scent runs very linearly and the low longevity/sillage does not carry me sufficiently, although Oud Cologne itself is great. Oh, and overcast because the Cologne-like scent lays like a veil over the Oud.
