Enigmatic Decadence.
'I adore it' isn't the most verbose of reviews so I shall seek to elaborate.

Think of a spiced rose, but with the potency but not the intoxicating 'thickness' that comes with those big white floral numbers. A rose that is not to be ignored must, MUST be noticed. I am biased though, being a fan of Cardamom and saffron. The saffron may cause some problems, and might be mistaken for another spice such as cumin.

It has attitude, a rose has thorns remember? A certain degree of attitude is needed to wear this scent I wear the fragrance to give confidence, to give attitude. This is fortunate as both the silage and longevity are very good.

Hidden Magic
Today I was looking for care products for my girlfriend in the English department store, as unfortunately, fragrances do not delight her.

So, I had tunnel vision on body lotions and shower gels.
I found something suitable from Bronnley and was about to head to the checkout when my gaze accidentally fell on an inconspicuous black box, which was also a bit dented.

It stood outside the perfume section and seemed like a rejected outsider.

This, in turn, piqued my interest, as I have a heart for marginalized groups and the unusual.

I also like to buy misshapen vegetables that no one wants - but still taste good.

The price was low, so I rescued Theo Fennell Scent from obscurity.

This brand is completely unknown to me.
But I loved the "surprise bags" from the kiosk as a child.

At home, the crumpled box released a beautifully shaped bottle - and the scent escaped from it like a dutiful genie from a magic lamp - so accommodating and so inviting.

I am with Aladdin in the Orient - yet the fragrance floats - like the friendly bottle spirit.

Warm and spicy, cardamom and saffron appear - and I board the flying carpet and float along.

We soar over orchids and rose gardens, surrounded by bright jasmine bushes.
The carpet lands, and I pick a small bouquet of delicately fragrant violets.
Incense lingers in the air and sweet tonka.
Patchouli wafts over from the colorful bazaars, and sandalwood clings to my skin like the precious silk carpet.

I nod to my genie - and we keep flying...

The Theodor, the Theodor...
... who stands in our soccer goal. No matter how the ball comes, no matter how the shot is taken, the Theodor saves it! Sung or sniffed by Theo Lingen (who remembers him?). Well, I have no idea about soccer, but I do know about Chypres, and here I must disagree with Louce, because Theo Fennell is (to my nose) not a Chypre! And I must agree with Michi, one must give this fragrance time and patience to recognize its beauty.
Theo in the soccer goal kicks off the game with a gentle spice league. In other words, players who head the ball with cardamom, saffron, and various flowers.
The game, which started almost subdued, becomes more intense. An erotic dance of mysterious flowers begins. The soccer players drop their pants right in the middle of the game!
At the latest here, a Chypre base should reveal itself. The famous damp moss note, the crunchiness of old Chypres, or the radiance of the new ones (e.g. the Sisleys). No, spiciness, smokiness, woodiness pass the ball to each other. A fine, unsweetened, substantial spicy oriental with wood in front of the goal!

A "Wolperdinger" Among Fragrances
What a Wolperdinger is, very few people know unless they come from Bavaria or Tyrol. A so-called Wolperdinger is a mythical creature that can be made up of various animals. A "bee-donkey with a cat's tail" or a bear with a tiger's head and an elephant's trunk... The imagination knows no bounds!
And Theo Fennell's "Scent" is such a mythical specimen on an olfactory level. It may be a chypre, but it also has a lot of a spicy fragrance. With jasmine, orange blossom, and violet, it presents itself with an almost "sweet" appearance, yet the saffron gives it a certain sharpness. And with sandalwood and patchouli, it could be a "Dark Oriental," while benzoin and incense point to a balsamic scent. The violet, along with its herbs and roots, is such a cheeky little rascal that it sometimes wants to dominate the fragrance. But then rose and lily throw a wrench in the works. And the woods rise up to play a trick on the tonka bean. It’s very interesting to listen to this game of confusion with the nose. And perhaps a little guessing game follows: "What shape will the fragrance take next?" .... What does it want to be... and what does it not!?...
Hard to believe??... but that's what my nose "tells" me!

Shiny Luxury
The chypre concept is to create a fragrance arc from a cologne-like citrus accord over a classic (rose or jasmine) floral note to a (wood) mossy base. Can I locate something like this in the Theo Fennel Scent?
The oriental aspect attributed to it, certainly... that's easy, as "Oriental" is a broad umbrella term, and the wonderfully heavy-elegant on a balsamic base with a bit of spice fits perfectly under the Theo Fennel Scent (even without vanilla). I struggle with this "non-existent chypre-oriental family"... but undoubtedly, I can smell the thing with the double-underlined LUXURY!
Pure decadence. Without guilt, without shy modesty. Plump, extravagant, ostentatious desire. Lavish, feudal, high-class.
“Uffgscheppt” is what they say in Hesse.

The beginning is immediately a clear statement: Here, ostentatious facts are being created. A classic top note is shrugged off in milliseconds of spray freshness, and suddenly one lands in a floral abundance, defiantly flirtatious, accentuated by a beautiful, slightly angular cardamom-saffron combo. I adjust to the suddenness, start to immerse myself in the scent, and then a wonderfully sunny orange (blossom) note comes in, which I would have actually expected a few minutes ago. It radiates and sparkles as much as it can. The floral notes merge; I can't smell any individual one (maybe jasmine?), it becomes a "flower-in-itself." This "flower-in-itself" becomes very lively, gilded by the orange.
With the base comes a sumptuous class, an anachronistic excellence. My vintage fragrance experiences are quite limited, but I smell an old-fashioned elegance that I find nowhere comparable in contemporary scents (I will send a sample to La Tanguera). The term "balsamic" is spelled out here from A to Z. I can smell frankincense and (slightly amber) benzoin in close harmony. The fragrance becomes warm, heavy, almost sultry, yet very noble, stylish, never over-the-top, but definitely extravagant.
Unheard of brilliance and still full of charm and power, the gold-orange can be smelled for a very long time. At the very end, there is a matte, warm woodiness with a faint floral echo and a gentle resin note.

__________________________________________________________
EDIT: In the meantime, I've understood chypre (which isn't actually hard), and yes, TFS is a chypre. The angularity that I initially attributed solely to the spice combo, I would today clearly call "chypric."
... And I now also know that chypre isn't really my thing, and that's what keeps me from using it regularly.

Luca Turin... there he goes again. He thought it was great. For me, it’s a total flop. Rose with gasoline, crude oil with a hint of rancid. Annoying.

A reinterpretation of the chypre theme with an animalic spicy twist. Not easy to tame and wear: a wild cat.

Spicy-soft floral, lily is noticeable, gently sweaty, creamy, subtly sweet, more beautiful than expected.

Powdery, not dry. Orange blossoms + violets + orchid. Lightly spicy = patchouli + a hint of cardamom. Some resins + wood. Not bad. Feminine.

A classically beautiful, multi-layered, quite intense, and somewhat overwhelming floral scent - spicy, slightly gourmand, with a hint of smokiness, and a touch creamy.

Back to the 80s. Chypre cannonball. Spicy, powerful, rounded, with a hint of delicate animalic.
Perfect for a nostalgia trip.

Classic-spicy animalic Chypre.
Dark, but not too intense with soft woods and smoke.
Soft-spicy-animalic.

The spicy beast in a chypre cloak - so heavy that I can only imagine wearing it during the day in winter; otherwise, it's a classy evening scent.

The rose bush stands in the sweaty, old changing room. Petals fall onto the dirty toilet. Base meets a grimy toothbrush holder. *
