Icelandic Fairy of Happiness
Background
"Hamingja" - Icelandic for "happiness" or "joy" - was also referred to in island folklore as a type of female fairy that decided the fortune of the person she accompanied and occasionally appeared to them as an animal in dreams. Under certain circumstances, one could even lend or pass her on to other people. Of course, we insiders on this platform know that gifts that influence happiness must naturally mean perfume ;)Scent
Hamingja does not smell like a child of joy. Darkly bitter, it lands on my skin. It briefly unfolds delicate leather wings and wafts a hint of fruitiness towards me. Beautiful (but not joyful). And it must have been flying for quite a while, as it brings with it a moist, nutty hint of nature spirit sweat. Or perhaps it’s just its warm saffron breath, whose mist pushes fog into the cold Icelandic air. More earthy brown than airy, Hamingja could also have been a goblin. I would have guessed a cup of fruit tea in hand, which turns out to be a sparingly dosed oud fruitiness. Unmoved by the misinterpretation, the nature spirit unpacks its provisions in the heart note: powdered rice pudding, sweetened only with a bit of plum juice, sprinkled with nut shards, yet evading the gourmand classification. After half a day, Hamingja playfully snuggles up to my arm with balsamic resin fingers, a bit sticky even, so one can hold on better.
Again: Not joyful. Cozy, however, yes. Comfortable, snug, hyggelig in Icelandic.
Brand Impression
I have not yet gone through the entire package from Vala's Enchanted Perfumery, but after nearly 10 natural perfume samples, it is clear that Moi Yggdottir has a preference for earthy, dark to gloomy, and often balsamic to resinous ending scent paintings that are atypical yet predominantly friendly. Hamingja is even a bit lighter. The oil-based perfumes I tested take some time to develop, but then usually unfold in a tension-filled and interesting way over most of the day after some intense seconds. Especially for natural perfumes, they really hold up well, some with, for example, patchouli as a steadfast fixative even lasting longer than some synthetic counterparts. Even the sillage is impressive: As one of the few brand packages from our test series, I always have to close the box after taking samples, otherwise my whole room smells of one of the scents (or probably rather all of the scents).12 samples from the Czech Republic cost under €30 - definitely worth a sniff.
And as I think about all this, I come to the conclusion that I would certainly entrust my happiness to Hamingja. If necessary, I could always pass on this nature spirit - or at least the sample! ;)
