Anpu - Neb-ta-djeser
Anubis - the jackal-headed god of death - radiates a mystical fascination into modern times like few others. Worshipped in ancient Egypt as the guide and guardian for the dead on their journey to the afterlife, he is today a welcome theme for creatives in the art of perfumery.
Aaron's engagement with Anubis likely has something to do with the god's appearance. Since the Egyptians hardly distinguished between jackals, dogs, and wolves, and Aaron is a passionate dog lover, it is no surprise that he donates a large portion of the fragrance's proceeds to a charity for dogs (Soidog.org). At the time of this review, more than 3000 British pounds have already been raised for these little souls without a voice.
The fragrance itself is heavily based on four main notes: incense, honey, musk, and sandalwood. The incense - as a cult resin - connects all the notes together like a veil. Still quite dominant in the first hour, only broken by a few tiny sprinkles of bergamot, it gradually sinks into a warm blend of dark honey and tobacco.
Moments of toffee frequently flash through, which I would attribute to the mingling of the protagonists with vanilla and amber.
The sandalwood contributes more with its subdued, smoky texture, extending the veil between the worlds as the incense slowly becomes softer towards the drydown. Here, dark musk also takes the helm a bit, allowing the fragrance to fade in its mystical aura after more than 10 hours.
Anubis has a lot, a lot of power.
And thus does justice to its namesake.
