The Elephant in the Soap Bubble

Slowly the midday hours pass on the soft skin of young elephants. There are strange and soapy shimmers over the warm and leathery furrows; drowsily land rose-green, indolic silk petals, along with remnants of earth and white roots, some strands of tars and tart terpenes, to cool the heat just some little bits. Then they plant moss on their tanned hides, steal loamy hay from strangers’ backs, and float away in soap bubbles without even realizing it.

In his creations, Angelos Balamis from Thessaloniki combines classic French vintage techniques with modern synthetic ingredients. He mastered both through countless courses with renowned perfumers in Paris. His scientific background also proved beneficial; during his vocational training, he took several chemistry courses.
The full range of his expertise is once again evident in “Vetiveria Animalis.” Here, from the very beginning, leathery, animalic notes (hyraceum, castoreum, civet) are carried by aldehydes with a slightly soapy quality. Silky and minimally indolic jasmine, roses with an almost green quality, spicy garden carnation, and the hay-like, animalic narcissus soon open up a subtle floral layer, beneath which earthy, root-like notes (iris butter, vetiver, patchouli) are clearly discernible. Thai oud, combined with ambrarone, underscores the leathery and smoky nuances, before oakmoss in the base once again highlights the soapy aldehyde notes.
What I find particularly interesting here is that it is the use of synthetic ingredients (aldehyde, Ambrarone, vetiveryl acetate) that makes the skillfully blended floral, animalic, leathery, and woody notes seem more classic. All in all, this makes the fragrance absolutely wearable and timeless.
